It did, at least for console shooters. Halo 1 put the genre on the map and modernized it to put console shooters on par with PC counterparts. Halo 2's networking system is the best approach to console shooters. Anyone that uses the party matchmaking system is automatically better than using the traditional "find a room" method. Hence why Gears 2 is better than Gears 1 in that respect.
Most of the gameplay is derivative of prior games, especially Tribes (Halo was originally supposed to be a "Tribes killer" on Mac). Thing is, nobody on consoles had seen that and Halo provided a sense of refinement to the entire thing. Without Halo, you're not getting other shooters (Killzone, Resistance, Gears, etc) on consoles, if at all.

As long as you aren't on a total crapbox, you should be able to run most of Valve's stuff. Steam makes the whole process pretty much self-explanatory and easy to deal with. As long as you're not giving your PC Computer Aids from downloading everything that looks pretty, you should be cool. Granted, if you're one of those people that breaks computers when you turn them on, its probably a good idea to go to the console versions.
