Finally played Paper Mario

So, after all these years I finally downloaded Paper Mario for the Virtual Console last week to play for the first time, upon CuccoLady's suggestion. I've played both sequels to the game, but I never actually played this for the N64. (I did, however, purchase a strategy guide for the game when it first came out... mainly because I was bored and wanted some Mario reading material.)

I beat the game tonight. The verdict? A good, solid Mario RPG, which did a good job of setting the ground for future games. A couple of random thoughts and rants:
  • So... did Bowser just march right into the Star Sanctum and take the Star Rod, while the Star Spirits just sat there and watched? I mean, they were right there, why didn't they stop him or anything? I just... don't get that.
  • Who would win in a fight between Jinx and the Dojo Master? While the Master might have apprentices with slightly cooler names than Jinx's (Jackie CHAN and Bruce LEE as opposed to Mick JAGGER), Jinx just kicked the ass out of the Master's bland personality. And Jinx was tiny, and his dojo was like twice as big as the Master's. Also, at least Jinx gave you something useful for beating him. The Master literally just gave you a ****ing piece of paper.
  • What was up with Twink's animation? Was he chewing something?
  • CURSE YOU, GRIND-PROOF STAR POINTS!
  • Okay, so Tubba Blubba was big and mean for a while to the Boos of Gusty Gulch. But this was only because when he was a regular, UNinvincible little Clubba, he was bullied and picked on by by the Boos for being a weakling. So Bowser comes and makes Tubba Blubba invincible, and he gets a little revenge on the Boos for tormenting him, and ooh, look who can't stand the heat! Yeah, Tubba Blubba was working for Bowser and had the Star Spirit captive, but like he said, he was just a real softie deep inside. And what did the Boos do when the Star Spirit escaped? They did the exact same thing Bowser did and captured him, not even letting him free until Mario agreed to help shuffle them out of their karma. And when Tubba Blubba was returned to normal? The Boos probably went back to bullying him. Bow even jokes about it. That bitch. What kind of moral is that?
  • The Mayor of Shiver City's wife is a ****.
  • The end credits and parade were just like in Super Mario RPG, right down to the fireworks at the end. Yeah, I know, they did that as a homage, but still, it left me thinking, eh... couldn't've done something different? Also, when Mario and Peach walked off together alone to Mario's house, I thought they were planning on starting some fireworks of their own, IF YA KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

So, all in all, Paper Mario was a fun romp around, and worth the download. I wouldn't put it up against Super Mario RPG or either of the Paper Mario sequels, but it was still plenty of fun. Also, you could tell the storytelling got a lot better by The Thousand-Year Door. Anywho, good game. Lots of fun. Thanks for pressuring me to get around to play it, CL.
