The originals while not incredible by today's standards were pretty great for its time, and can stand up pretty well to alot of today's sh*tstains...
When it comes to a good and recent 2D Sonic game,
Sonic Rush on the Nintendo DS is pretty great. I felt it was a little lacking, but all around was a great game.
As far as 3D Sonic Games though, I never found anything too wrong with them, and found them to be all around decent games that you could enjoy for at least a little while.
The main problem I had with them were the controls, they got pretty sloppy...

(I can't speak for Sonic the Hedgehog on the 360, Secret Rings, or Unleashed as I've never played them. The only thing I can say is that Unleashed looks great...)
This looks promising I guess...
