Geno
First Appearance:
Super Mario RPG (Super NES, 1996)
Latest Appearance:
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA, 2003)
Geno is one of the main playable characters in
Super Mario RPG developed by Squaresoft and Nintendo. He is a mysterious and enigmatic character, but we do know that he is tasked with the protection of the mystical Star Road; a heavenly body that makes it possible for wishes to come true in Mario's world. When Smithy invades Mario's world, destroying the Star Road in the process, Geno departs from the heavens, takes on the form of a child's doll, and sets out with Mario and company on a quest to restore the Star Road to its former glory.
Like all characters originally introduced in
Super Mario RPG, Geno seems to be in permanent retirement. He does, however, show up years later in a cameo role in the GBA's
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, as a tutor for a specific minigame. This is pure fan service if ever such a thing existed. After all, Nintendo doesn't actually own the rights to the Geno character; Square does. And the tutor for that minigame could easily have been just another anonymous mushroom person. Nintendo, however, recalled how popular Geno continued to be with the fans, and decided to give us an Easter egg. So they cobbled together their lawyers and their contracts and their briefcases full of licensing fees, and they walked across the street to Square, and they said, "Hey, guys. Since we're on semi-friendly terms again, how about lending us the use of Geno for a small role in our new Mario game? We think the fans would really get off on it."
Nintendo does care, even if they have difficulty showing it at times.
