Yeah, as far as the ending goes, I'm going to give an official shrug of the author on what it signifies. I'd been reading Haruki Murakami's novel
Kakfa on the Shore at the time and was knee deep into surrealism.
The cucumber comes from asking my roommate to name a random object. Originally I was going to have him jump into a blackhole. Then my roommate suggested a salad. Then, when I was searching for music to add during his transformation, I came across the song "Les Sucettes" (which means "The Lollipops") and the rest was history.
There are a few little things hidden for fun. Jean-Paul Sartre and Haruki Murakami's portraits are in the back of the classroom, surrounding Franz Kafka's portrait which eventually stays in the frame. Later, I would realize that I'd subconsciously borrowed from Kafka's
Metamorphosis. Sartre's quote "Existence Precedes Essence" is also written on the board in the kitchen. I also hid a Shakespeare quote under the window in the bedroom that's so tiny it could never be read and was completely pointless to add.
