Exaggeration beside, the truth is few Sonic games can be accepted in their entirety, even ones you might consider 'safe.'

Sonic 1: His spindash is more or less thought to have always been possible. The lack of it and the 7th emerald makes part of this game unacceptable, thus it cannot be entirely accepted.
Sonic 2: Tails cannot fly if you control him. Like most old games, there are no other humans. If you wish to accept the Sonic Adventure games in their entirety, this game can't be taken as entirely canon.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Super Emeralds, Super Tails, Hyper forms, and potentially Hyper Metal Sonic may not exist anymore canonically, as they are almost never brought up or reinforced, and future games from this game ignore it. Super emeralds appear to be, for sure, no longer canon.

Sonic Adventure: Voice actors change after this game. Eggman says it is a nickname instead of acting like it is his main name. Random chao changes. Tails acts much younger in this game than he is in most peers to this game.
Sonic Adventure 2: Eggman pointing a gun at people, Gerald's darker and edgier behaviors, Shadow's entire personality, GUN's perceived strength (which is never this high again in any future games, nor is it explained why they lost it) not to mention iffy plot hooks just barely giving a reason for Rouge or Knuckles to even be IN this game, and Tails in a mech. Long before the games were seen to suck, this game paved the way for 'iffy' changes which generally get thrown out either canonically or by fans.

Sonic Heroes: Terminator Metal Sonic. Eggman being defeated so badly by his own machine. Chao being the source of the ability to morph into any shape one wants. Shadow's personality from here is in transition, so neither games before or after it use it. The fate of Metal Sonic here conflicts with his continued appearances elsewhere, suggesting someone dropped the ball (or Metal Sonic) when they planned the end of this. Omega is given one voice here, which is then immediately changed. This game conflicts with the ages given for Chaotix as well. GUN is almost nowhere to be seen despite practically ruling the world in SA2.

That's just a short sample, but I hope you get my point. Almost no Sonic game is immune to parts which cannot be taken too seriously/considered a permanent thing series-wide. Those which aren't directly contradicted often wind up being ignored or shoved to the side instead--therefore, why not play Shadow the Hedgehog for the well-made engine? It is still rather fun, and to someone who isn't an in-depth Sonic fan, its terrible story is much less grating.

And it's probably dirt cheap.
