Outside of MMORPGs, PC RPGing is dead. Actually, PC gaming in general is dead. There's like 3 to 5 titles a year that are worth anything.

If you can find anything, try the old Black Isle/Bioware titles. Baldur's Gate/Baldur's Gate II + expansions are excellent, as is Planescape: Torment. All of which should be bargain bin by now. There's always psuedo-RPGs like Diablo II and Dungeon Siege, where its more hack-and-slash style. Warcraft III had RPGish elements with the hero system, so that might be worth a pickup. But really, outside of those, I'm pretty tapped for a good, non-FPS PC title.

In terms of MMORPGs, World of Warcraft is worth a playthrough, although its been getting on my nerves lately. Dungeons and Dragons Online looks decent, although who knows how much support it will get. City of Heros/Villains looks really good, but again, not sure on the community on those titles.
