Musicals

What’s your opinion on musicals? Do you like them, and if so what are your favourites? I’m not talking about musical theater alone, but also about movies. I usually enjoy musicals. I’ll give you a few of my favourite examples.

The Phantom of the Opera

The only musical I actually saw a stage performance of (in Dutch). My parents had visited it and got a CD with the highlights, which me and my brothers grew very fond of, so my parents took us to the show. I really enjoyed it, and I think the music was great. I also recently saw the 2004 film adaptation, which was brilliantly done in my opinion. Some of my favourite songs are Angel of Music, Phantom of the Opera and Music of the Night.

Jesus Christ Superstar

Another Lloyd Webber musical, but I have only seen the film version of this one. My father also owns the soundtrack of the film on vinyl. My favourite songs are the title track and I Don’t Know How To Love Him.

Moulin Rouge!

I recently saw this one when I read what kind of movie this was. I knew it was a musical, but I didn’t know they took classic pop and rock songs and adapted them for a new story. I really liked how they used Your Song, Roxanne and especially The Show Must Go On. I also really liked the love song medley.

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas

I absolutely love this movie. Not because it has an amazing story, but because it has a wonderful score and many beautiful songs by Danny Elfman. I’ve watched this film many times just to hear the score (I should probably get the soundtrack), and I love every song. My favourite is probably the opening song.

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

This may not fit in with the others I posted so far, but I think that beyond a hilarious movie it’s also a great musical. The songs are not only funny lyrically, but at times also very beautiful musically like Up There and the Resistance Medley. I think South Park in general often has brilliant songs

Team America: World Police

Similar to the South Park movie, although I though this one wasn’t as good musically. Still there are some great songs (especially lyrically) like America **** Yeah, and I’m So Ronery. And have you ever paid attention to the lyrics of Montage? They’re so spot on. It’s my favourite song of the movie.

Ok that’s enough superlatives for one post. Let’s hear some of your favourites.
