^ I remember the first time I tried playing Super Mario 64, I tried using the D-pad (in fact, I held the controller the wrong way TWICE before getting it right).

EDIT: Another thing. I also remember people played Super Mario 64 on in-store displays holding the analog stick like a joystick (i.e. holding the stick, instead of holding the handle and using your thumb). This, sadly, resulted in many a broken analog stick.
