Who would've thought of mass-marketing personal computers before the 70s? (Certainly not Packard) Who would've thought of television before the people started working on it? Who would've thought of the telegraph before people started working on it?
I know there's a flip side to this coin: Who would've thought of the Virtual Boy before Yokoi? But my point stands, new ideas are, by definition, new. Sometimes they're good; sometimes they're bad, but we don't know until they happen.
