A) Do any of those things amount to fixing something that wasn't broken?
B) Those things all came about not because somebody wanted to give the world a bunch of fancy toys, but for improved communication (especially when you take into mind that it took a Colonial US<->France letter at least three months to arrive at its destination before the telegraph). And though you didn't mention it, the Internet was created for a way of communication in the event the Soviets launched their missiles and wiped out half of the US.
