And away we go.....:

=-------------------------------------------------

It was time for a change.

Jacob awoke with a start, short of breath and drenched in his sweat. It stung his eyes and held him to his bed. The night terrors were getting worse. His head pounded as he slowly rose, grimacing slightly, trying to recall the phantoms that had flown through his mind as he lay sleeping. As his eyes focused to the morning, he steadied himself at his table and looked around his shack. The sun's early rays seeped through his windows and illuminated the shack in a peaceful glow.

Jacob's shack was meager, to say the least. It held only one room, with his bed on one side and his table and cabinets on the other, but it's location on the castle grounds was a priceless incentive. Deep within the heart of the kingdom, it would be a near impossible target to destroy, were there an invasion. But that was unlikely.

The kingdom of Hyrule knew no enemies, and it lived its days in peace and prosperity. Jacob had heard days of different days, when the world was a much darker place, but he found them hard to believe. Or exaggerated, at least. As he dressed, he began planning his day in his head. At noon, he planned to... Then it dawned on him. Rushing to the window, he looked up to the sun.

He cursed under his breath. He had slept several hours to late. The Prince would be furious. He quickly opened the door and began running to the stables.

I don't believe this! His mind yelled. I’ll be banished from the kingdom! Or worse!

He continued down the road until he came to a small building beside the castle proper.
The stable was easily twice (perhaps thrice) the size of Jacob’s humble home, but Jacob’s shack
didn’t have to provide for the prince’s horses. Jacob slowed his pace and began to breathe
heavily as he neared the entrance, his mind cursing all the while, when he heard behind him a
voice all too familiar.

“Well, it appears that the stable-boy has finally decide to bless us with his appearance.
Good show.”

Damn.

Slowly, Jacob turned.

There, waiting for him, was the Prince of Hyrule. His dark eyed glared at Jacob.

"I'm sorry, sir," he said.

"I daresay you should be. The knights in training expected their horses to be ready by now. You have cost us precious time. Now, come on, we haven't much time."

An hour or so passed, as Jacob prepared the horses. He did not think to much of war, and therefore of the knights, partly because he thought the whole thing unnecessary. Wars were gone. A thing belonging to an older time. They just didn't happen today, in Hyrule at least.

He had discussed these things one time in the Hyrule Market, when an old man had overheard him.

"I remember an older time," the old man muttered. "I remember war... and death. I remember when the king himself had lost his throne and a mad man took control of the whole blasted kingdom! You... you and everyone else... the entire world... owes their lives to one man. One boy. He saved us all."

Jacob found this hard to believe.

"When was this?" he asked. "When you were a boy?"

The old man sighed.

"This was hardly a quarter of a century ago."

Jacob was shocked.

"When you foreget your past..." the man mumbled, as he wandered slowly away, "you never know your future."

As Jacob finsihed preparing the horses, he recalled the old man's words. What did he mean?

"I daresay, Stable-Boy, are you finished?" the Prince asked impatiently.

"Yes," Jacob replied. "I apologize again for my tardiness."

"Well, be off then." He waved Jacob away.

Jacob left the stable, and begin his slow march back to his shack. Without warning, thunder cracked the sky and a heavey rain began to fall.

"Damn," he muttered. "I hate the rain."

OoC: This isn't the flood, just a bit of foreshadowing...
