Network Adapter question

I'm sure you all get this type of question a lot, but please bear with me.

I have two computers hooked up to a wireless network. One computer has the modem and router in the same room because it lacks a wireless card. The other computer, my computer, has a built in wireless card and an antennae to receive the router's signal. I bought a network adapter awhile ago. It didn't work so I sold it to a friend of mine...but now since my connection is better, I'm thinking it may work again. At least that's what Sony told me when I called them a long time ago. My question is: If I wanted to play online, could I just connect a ethernet cord from the adapter to the ethernet port in my comptuer? Could I run a wire to the router and connect from there? Or would I need to buy a wireless gaming adapter in order to play online? I'm sorry for the long question, being as this is my first post, but any help would be greatly appreciated.
