Well the cartoon had humour, but the original comics were really quite dark (you can read the first two issues for free at the
Ninja Turtles website).
When the CGI Ninja Turtles movie was in the rumour stage, there was rumours that it would go back to the darkness of the comics. However, from the looks of it, it looks like there will still be humour (at least concerning Michaelangelo).
