Alright, I went to see Lady in the Water yesterday.

I liked it.

We can all agree that M. Night Shyamalan has a very polarized fan base. You either like his films or you don't.

I personally believe that Shyamalan was unfairly typecast, after the success of the Sixth Sense, as both a director of only thrillers and a director that includes twists in all his movies.

After The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan released 4 films: Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, and this film.

I can say that of these films, only Signs can be considered a thriller.

OK, back to this film. Lady in the Water is very different from Shyamalan's previous films. For starters, it's more fantasy than thriller. Sure, there's this scary wolf-creature, but other than one jump scare, it's no more scary than the big bad wolf.

A criticism of this film that I have been reading is that M. Night Shyamalan upgrades his acting role from cameo to major character. The critics say it's self-indulgent, but I personally didn't mind it. It isn't the first time a director cast himself in a major role. Plus, I would have to say that ALL the supporting characters in this film has a major role to play.

Speaking of critics, Shyamalan decided to poke a jab at film critics, but including one in the story that keeps on ranting on how there is "no originality left."

Overall, I found the film enjoyable. I would say it would be my third favourite Shyamalan film.

If you're interested, my ranking of his films are this:
  1. The Sixth Sense
  2. Signs
  3. Lady in the Water
  4. Unbreakable
  5. The Village (which, I have been starting to like more through repeat viewings)
Oh, and one last thing, there's no twist ending, so don't go looking for one.
