Home Hax: Making your House Interact with You

That's right, people! There are a couple of things you can do with a house, an overhead light, a InfraRed motion detector, and an IR Reciver with an outlet. You just deactivate all of the power in your house, unscrew the faceplate on the wall, test the wires of the switch behind the faceplate (for safety, DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP, EVEN IF YOU DID DEACTIVATE ALL POWER). Then, replace the standard switch with an X10 switch (match the wires to the appropriate colors), after that, mount an X10 InfraRed motion detector, then connect an X10 Wireless Reciever into a nearby wall outlet, then mount an X10 motion detector on the wall. Configure them all to channel 1 or 2, particularly 1. Reactivate all power, and test your motion activated light. If all goes well, your light should turn right on. If not, confirm all previous steps and retry. Also, if this is an overhead light you are dealing with, make sure the appropriate strings are pulled to work correctly. You can use a PC with X10 technology to do such things. There are certain websites that teach you how to do things with X10 like build your own computer and make it a total media center that automatically allows you to play classic game ROMs with the most popular emulators, watch streaming television, archive DVDs, and organize MP3 playlists. All with an X10 InfraRed remote, and a PC that is synchronized with a TV.
