At the time, Square Soft was going bankrupt. They could no longer make games. So, as their final game ever, they created
Final Fantasy. However, the game was so vastly popular that it sold so many copies, it allowed them to come out of bankruptcy. Of course, with a game that popular, they had to make a sequel, thus making it have one of the most ironic names ever.
I'm pretty sure it went something like that.
