Trust me, it starts off slow -- the towers are really just training, and very efficient training at that -- but Terranigma will pick up. Hell, after you beat the five towers the plot escalates... and after Chapter 3... well.
And for the record, I know it's Xenosaga. I'm just lazy and the typo king.
