You don't block.

I generally head towards the Linga region first. Level up in the nearby dungeon, Sanctuary of Linga, and then when the level progress slows I head back to take on the Tournement.

You need to get to Dias to be able to get the base weapon for your strongest weapon for Claude. That is you get to Dias, get your ass kicked. Then head over to Gamgee at the house far to the western portion of Lacour.
