It was obviously in defense to rumors of Microsoft lowering there price at E3. That spured a chain reaction where microsoft lowered their price just after Sony lowered PS2's price; Then Nintendo Lowered their price. Hence the Beginning of the price war.
I don't think Sony would have lowered prices if it wasn't for the rumors. They just started to make a profit of hardware because of more effieciant manufacturing process. But, now there back in a hole looseing money on hardware once again. Now Microsofts loosing a ton of money on hardware and Nintendo is loosing a little bit of the green stuff on hardware.
