WTF? Everyone knows Tetris is a story-driven game. It's the story of an architect in Russia during Stalin's five year plans who is given far too many tetromino-shaped bricks than are needed to complete construction. The only way the architect can use them all is to build them in such a way that they oblitherate each other. But at some point, the architect has to overstack, and construction will fail.
Spoiler Below Tetris is really a metaphorical tale about the flaws of communism. The U.S.S.R. became corrupt and warred against the United States, which is represented by the falling blocks that dually represent the nonexistent missles that both countries pretended to have in the arms race that was the Cold War. The space shuttle you see represents the U.S.S.R.'s initial success in the space race. The U.S.S.R. became increasingly unstable over time, alluded to by the blocks stacking up in the playfield, and as the player tops out and the game finally ends, the Soviet Union collapses. It's really a story about the touching struggle of the Soviet Union to stay alive.
It would work better as an OVA, though.
