Codie, I think there's something seriously messed up with your controller or something. Pressing down always ground pounded for me, and I had no angle problems whatsoever. I just held it in the direction I wanted Yoshi to go. And it worked.
(Oh, and while A + Z would have been ideal, I'm thinking they wanted to stick with Yoshi's Island-type controls or something like that and just decided on + Down.)
