People like Jean-Jaques Rosseau, Voltaire, Le Baron de Montesquieu, John Locke, and Adam Smith. Thomas Jefferson himself used Locke as his influence when he wrote the Declaration of Independence. These people were directly rebelling against the church. Our founders were Deists when it came to public policy.
