If the situation occurs again, just shrug and tell her you behave that way when you enjoy someone's company. Ask her if it's making her uncomfortable, and if it is, you should tone it down. Nothing wrong with giving someone compliments, but not everyone actually likes them.
You're much better off just talking normally to her and chatting about things you both like instead of forcing the attention to
her. Ask her questions and have a good time.
