The biggest differences? Blu-ray did not innately support dvd. They're actually capable of different functions. Blu-ray discs likely contribute to deforestation, because as far as I recall they are using a super-compressed paper processing technique to create the discs.

Other than that, the only difference is in compression. HD-DVD is further compressed, but human perceptions aren't sharp enough to pick up the differences.

As far as I know, they both have major DRM issues.
