So apparently, you know absolutely nothing about how tournaments go:

Before the fight, both fighters ban one stage, one that their character sucks on, or one their opponent is too good on. When fighting a Marth, you'd want to ban Fountain of Dreams, etc etc.

There's a list of neutral stages: Yoshi's Story, Fountain of Dreams, Pokemon Stadium, Battlefield, Dream Land 64, and Final Destination. For the first battle, the stage is chosen at random from among these.

For the second battle, the loser gets to choose a stage from either the neutral stages or a Counterpick stage. Some stages favor certain characters, so if you want to win the second time, you'd want to pick a stage that is in your character's favor, or not in the other character's favor. The counterpick stages are all the stages left except for the banned ones.

These are the banned stages and the reasons (stated by me) why. Keep in mind, the tournament is pretty competitive and people don't want to lose after a whole day because they got hit by a tool on Flat Zone.

* Brinstar Depths: No ledges, and certain rotations are too good for characters like Marth
* Flat Zone: Stage hazards, you could easily get stage killed at 0%
* Great Bay: The circle--Fox players could shoot one laser and then run away until time runs out
* Icicle Mountain: Stage kills too easily
* Hyrule Temple: The circle--see Great Bay
* Yoshi's Island N6: Something to do with a broken Fox tactic with lasers, but I forget what
* Yoshi's Island (Pipes): Fox can shine people off the stage lickedy-split
* Venom: Divider in the middle is broken for Marth
* Fourside: Divider in the middle is broken for Marth
* Mushroom Kingdom I: Walk-off edges (see Yoshi's Island)
* Big Blue: Stage kills
Mushroom Kingdom II: Walk-off edges.
