He's alive. Vash carts his ass back to town where Meryl and Millie are. Vash seems set to hook up with Meryl based on the series. I hate to think what happens to Millie after her guy died.

And then the gras grew where they lived. It kept growing and growing until finally all of the desert planet became paaradise. That is until Vash got freaked out at something he saw and blew another hole in the moon.
