Recommend any good Mangas?

Yes, I know this isn't the manga board, and generally should be about Anime, but I don't know where else to put it. Reading?

Regardless, does anyone recommend any? I'm intimidated by the huge shelf in Barnes & Nobles, and I like to remain open to suggestions.

Sometimes I'll pick up a random manga and read it, see if its any good, and decide if I want to continue.

These are the ones I've tried thus far.
  • SGT Frog
- It was good, and I would love to buy another, but after volume 11 I don't know if it stopped being produced, or they just won't get it in...
  • Cromartie High School
- My favorite manga, hands down. I'm waiting to get volume 10 in.
  • Ranma 1/2
- I'm not made of money, dammit.
  • King Of Hell
- It was okay, but many of the volumes were out of print, so I couldn't exactly do much about that.
  • One Piece
  • InuYasha
  • Full Metal Alchemist
  • Shaman King
  • Dragon Ball
  • Yu Yu Hakusho
- These either never had the first one in, I didn't care for, or some other problem.

There's one I know people will suggest, but I don't know how to spell it >_>, so I can't say I've tried it.

Mainly I'm looking for a comedy/action/drama, or anything like that.

There's so many, I wouldn't even know where to begin looking. The reason this list may look short is I hadn't gotten into Manga until about six months ago, and I don't go to Barnes & Noble that often.

Just please, don't recommend Fruits Basket. I hate Fruits Basket so much.

Seriously. Death note.

Wow. Just...Just, wow.

I'd heard my friend mention Deathnote, and say it was good, but I never actually read it.

I bought volume one, and I'm efficiently hooked.

I only read the first two chapters, but it's already ingenious.

The whole plan that L had, it was absolute genious. And I'm sure it will not let up on cleverness as I go along. Thanks guys, you helped me find an amazing manga.

FMA all the way. And I don't think 12 has been released for all areas yet, for SGT. Frog. It's awesome, though.

I have read mostly Korean stuff; Island, Priest, Ragnarok.
The first two are not for the feint of heart or Christian (trust me), but all three are very good.

Some others I suggest are battle Angel Alita and Hellsing (Do NOT watch the anime for either), Naruto is pretty well drawn and the art gets better with every volume, but don't even think of starting to buy, the end is nowhere in sight.

I started on Zombie Powder a while back, its a Shonen Jump book so its three dollars cheaper per volume and it has a complete story (although rather campy), and its not one of those sprawling hundred issue mangas.

All of the people above me have failed in not recommending the one that matters:

Lone Wolf and Cub.

That is the only manga that anyone will ever need ever.

-RahXephon.

Think "The Matrix" meets "Gundam". The Anime of this was the only thing that EVER made me cry, and I even begin to feel sad while reading the Manga.

-xxxHolic

It seems kind of Twilight Zone-esque.

-Warcraft: Sunwell Trilogy

For Warcraft fans. Done by the artist of "King of Hell".

-Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi

Perverse, but funny.

-.hack//LEGEND OF THE TWILIGHT

How Legend of the Twilight Bracelet SHOULD have turned out.

-Akira

You'd be surprised how similar the manga is to the anime, yet at the same time so different. More time for character development, although no 1980's "KA-NAY-DAAAAAH!".

Anne Freaks... That is rather interesting... Lots of other things... But I don't think that people like to read the random stuff that I do... Chobits is good too... That is all that I will recommend...

If they can afford all 26 volumes.

I haven't read it yet, but I liked the movies.

The first one alone is awesome, and it's like all of ten dollars. Ten dollars per three or four hundred pages of pure, unadulterated awesome? Yeah.

Throw thirty dollars at the first three volumes and see if you don't become a collector.

It's the best stuff out there, period.

Hm, I know Death Note will have 12 volumes.

(In the store, I had to see when the 12th would be out, so I checked the back and the description of volume 11, and it said, "The End Is Nigh.")

I love Death Note. I've already read one to five. ;_; Barnes & Noble doesn't have six in, so I have to wait at least a week for my order to arrive.

Lone Wolf and Cub, I think I looked for it/those (I can't tell if that's one manga's title, or two.) but I didn't find it/either.

I'll check again. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have read a bit of PhD: Phantasy Degree, a lot got lost in translation.

If fantasy/ comedy is what you look for, try Monster Collection. It is light hearted at moments and incredibly brutal at others, but overall a good read with excellent art and interesting characters.

I'm already hooked on Kazuo Koike thanks to Lady Snowblood. I've heard Crying Freeman is pretty good, too.

Gojeki Kojima's art is a big part of the appeal.
