Akira

I'm thinking about getting this movie. I heard it's pretty good. Should I get it?

I...just read that this is a must see Anime in Entertainment Magazine.

I don't really read it, but my mom pushed it on me because there was an article on Anime she thought I might like.

So, I'd take your chances. It sounds good.

I saw it once... trippy. Also, there's some brief nudity so you might want to be careful who you watch it with.

Wow, you people suck.

You are not an anime fan if you haven't seen (or even heard of) Akira. WTF is wrong with you? You lose.

Akira is considered one of the pinnacles of the entire term anime. The damn thing (along with Ghost in the Shell, not those garbage series you see on Cartoon Network, the actual movie) set the tone for Anime and is largely the reason why Anime even made it outside of Japan.

Akira is the equivalent of Citizen Kane and the Godfather for the genre.

Yeah, there's nudity. And violence, and drug use, and profanity. It's still hands-down the best anime in existance. Period.

If you haven't seen it, you aren't an anime fan and you officially suck.

^ Hey, I've seen the damned movie. Correct me if i'm wrong,

Spoiler Below
but wasn't Akira himself nothing more then some brain cells? I also remember psychic powers and old kids who utilised giant teddy bears brought into existence by their minds.

I could be butchering it horribly, my memory of it is fuzzy at best and i'm almost afraid to google search it.

^Yeah, that's pretty much correct...I'd add a rather disturbing scene (For those who do not know what all that symbolizes, or younger viewers) but that would be a spoiler.

There's also a manga version of Akira, if you want to check it out.

^^'Yes' on the second and third things; 'sort of' on the first part.
Spoiler Below
As I interpret it, Akira was just a normal psychic (feh) at first; however, his powers developed much faster than those of the other children in the government program, to the point that he attained the same sort of world-devouring power that Tetsuo eventually manifested. After the first disaster, the army dissected and froze Akira to prevent such power from being released again. Later, after Tetsuo thawed Akira's body parts out, Akira came back to life, took stock of the situation, and annihilated himself, Tetsuo, and the other children, seemingly in order to protect the world from Tetsuo and, perhaps, to save Tetsuo from himself. (That's how I see it, anyhow.)

Hell of a movie, by the way. Even if you don't understand everything that happens, it makes for a tremendous action flick. And the animation still looks great.

The movie makes more sense if you read the manga, which is six massive, beautifully illustrated volumes. HELL of a book.

The manga is pretty damned sweet. It's also expensive as hell. If, after watching 'Akira', you don't understand precisely what went on, I'd personally recommend watching it again over shelling out $150 for the manga.

Alas, you are right, it is very expensive.

You can get it much cheaper from Amazon, though.

And I'd still recommend collecting the manga - over time, if need be - solely for the sake of certain plot elements being necessarily dropped from the movie. It makes you appreciate the richness of it all a bit more.

All I remember seeing of him was a freeze tube with his brain stem and part of his arm in it, although your description defuzzes my memory a little.

It DEFINITELY was a pretty sweet movie.

^That's pretty much the major difference in the manga.

One of the reasons the manga's pretty expensive is because not only is each volume the size of a child's colouring book but it's pretty hard to find as well. actual comic stores that sell manga (As in, imported non-translated manga directly from Japan or Korea) in my state are trying to get ahold of it.

The other major difference lies in certain characters not being present in the anime, or having smaller roles. The Akira difference may have been due to the movie being completed when the manga was only half-finished.

The English version is a bit easier to find, particularly through the likes of Amazon.
