| Guest | ++Witch Hunter Robin Coming to the Cartoon Network! - The Anime News Network and several other Web sites have confirmed that Witch Hunter Robin, the superbly animated 26-episode series from Sunrise Animation, will appear on the Cartoon Network during the current 2003-2004 television season, either late this year or early in 2004. ++Another Season For Stand Alone Complex - The French anime site Sugoi is reporting that Production IG has announced the January 2004 debut of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Second Gig. The 26-episode series is the sequel to the first 26-episode Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex anime, and like its predecessor it will feature episodes that advance a central storyline (Complex) as well as some as which are self- contained (Stand Alone). According to Sugoi, the new series will have numerous connections with the new Ghost in the Shell Innocence movie directed by Mamoru Oshii, which is due out in Japan on March 6, 2004. ++Cartoon Network's New Anime Roar - Bandai and FUNimation have informed us that their newest titles on Cartoon Network, SD Gundam Force and Dragonball GT respectively, have been pulling in some amazing ratings. The debut of Dragon Ball GT pulled in a whopping 9.7 for males 9-14 and an impressive 8.6 for males 6-11. Meanwhile, in the latest Nielson ratings, SD Gundam Force pulled in a very respectable 6.3 with males 6-11, but more importantly also pulled in the same 6.3 rating in the household category. ++The Mess at Studio Ironcat - Have you ever ordered Futabakun Change Vol #4 from us only to have it placed on backorder for 2 or 3 months? The reason might surprise you. In today's market where manga is the fastest-growing element of printed pop culture, how could a company which has published over 50 volumes of Japanese and domestic manga be on the verge of collapse? The answer, according to a recent detailed report, lies in a tangled web of embezzlement (apparently by one of the company's Japanese founders) and exploitation of employees, whose enthusiasm for the material led them into situations where they worked as unpaid "interns," and eventually had their wages withheld when the company fell on financial hard times. Ten employees resigned from Studio IC (the company was forced to change its name when Masaomi Kanzaki pulled out) between May and August of 2003, and six employees filed wage claims against Studio IC with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry. The future of the AmeriManga anthology and Studio Ironcat's other titles remains in doubt -- a testament to the difficulties of publishing and the perils of mismanagement even in so-called "boom times." ++Tokyo Godfathers to Open in Both Japan & US - According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Satoshi Kon's latest anime feature Tokyo Godfathers will open simultaneously in Japan and the US on December 29. ++GiTS: Innocence Trailer - A trailer for Ghost in the Shell: Innocence is now online at Production I.G's Innocence website: http://www.innocence-movie.jp/inform...r/tokuho1.html ++Neon Genesis Directors' Cut Coming - ADV Films will release Resurrection, the first of two directors cut volumes of the enormously influential anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion on January 13, 2004. More than a re-master, the revised and re-edited special edition produced under the careful supervision of creators Hideaki Anno and Gainax will include footage previously unavailable outside of Japan. ++Geneon Acquires Four New Anime Series Geneon - representatives at the Las Vegas ComicCon have announced the acquisition of North American rights to four new anime series. Perhaps the most commercially potent of the four new titles is Gadguard, the stylish 26- episode giant robot series from Studio Gonzo, which currently ranks as #19 in the Newtype Japan poll of favorite anime series. The first Gadguard release should be out by the fall of 2004. ++Samurai Champloo Website & Trailer - The official website for Shin'ichiro Watanabe's first new work since Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, is now online at: http://www.SamuraiChamploo.com. The website includes a short (15 second) Real Media trailer that can be viewed here. http://www.jvcmusic.co.jp/ram_v/samu...rai_c_CM1S.ram ++Gundam on GameCube- Bandai has announced the first Gundam game for the GameCube, Mobile Suit Gundam: Sen****achi no Kiseki (Path of the soldiers), will be released in Japan sometime next year. |
