One Piece: Redemption (Dub Review)

Well, it's time for me to return, and review one of my favorite animes: One Piece.

As we all know, One Piece has had a rocky history in the US of A. With 4kids' horrifying dubbing, they single handily ripped apart the chances of One Piece's chance to gain momentum in America.

But now, One Piece has found a new home with Funimation. And now, their new dub has premiered, less than an hour ago after this review. Time for you to know how I feel.

...

This...

Is by far...

The greatest dub to ever grace Toonami.

The dubbing was fantastic and convincing. They fitted nearly perfectly with the characters. No flaws were made. None. Funimation made no mistakes in this one, this was a serious dub. They made no expense to recruit the best of the best of their voice actors, all of whom have experience in dub from FMA, DBZ and others. Gone is the annoying voice of Luffy's past VA, gone are the accents, the monotone acting, the lack of any emotion. This is what an ideal dub should be.

Specifically, I highly liked Ussop and Luffy's voice the best. Of all the characters, they had voices that were the most difficult to get right, and the talents of Sonny Strait and ColleenClinkenbeard got it just right.

Now, onto the music. NONE of it was taken out of the actual show. The beautiful orchestrated music is perfectly intact. I would not take it any other way. <3 Now, as for the Openings and Endings, they were also dubbed. Rather well, I might add. I would rather have it in Japanese, but is much better than I expected. No more Gum Gum Rap!

Now, as for the violence, we still have much to see. (The showing of bodies gives the idea that there may be more intact violence than in the 4Kids dub.) However, that can be covered later.

I have high hopes for thisAnime. It not only has an all-star cast, but it has high chance of getting a large following that 4Kids lacked. I may even start preferring the dub to the sub (Like I prefer the Cowboy Bebop dub to it's sub.)

Now, here is the bottom line!

FINAL THOUGHTS
----------------

+ Dubbing was ****ing fantastic!
+ Music Completely Intact.
+ Opening and Endings, while dubbed, are VERY well dubbed.
+ The humor is great! I am happy it was not lost in the dubbing.

= Neutral on the action. I still have yet to see any.

FINAL SCORE
------------
10.00

Now I finally have something on Toonami to watch now.

...

...

...

Oh yeah! This is 9-Volt, by the way. I review the Naruto dub when it premiered

From your ecstatic review, I am almost disappointed that I did not catch this newfangled dub. I hope to get to see it soon enough, and I am very glad to hear that it is one hell of an improvement.

For those whom missed the new dub, your in luck! I found as sample clip of the episode so that you can hear most of the new voices!

That was on last night?

I actually watched like some of the beginning. I thought it was still 4Krap's.

The best part about the dub is that Luffy finally has a voice that makes him sound like he's anywhere NEAR the age of 17, or even a guy. I no longer want to strangle that little Mr. Fantastic Wannabe every time he opens his mouth.

What? One Piece's dub is now better than Naruto?

Shame on me for watching Wayne's World yesterday, but excellent!

I'm glad to hear that Luffy's voice, while slightly similar to the old voice, is much better. As well, I like Sanji's new voice. Much better than that corny old one. Zoro's voice was okay by itself, but it seems to be better now anyway. Didn't hear Ussop. Chopper's voice seemed more appropriate now. And as for Nami, I really didn't hear enough to see a difference. Overall, pretty good new voices. It seems to be much better now, so I might check it out next Saturday.

Oh, there is a voice sample somewhere with Ussop speaking, I will rummage through Youtube later.

But first, I wanna show the beautifully dubbed third opening of One Piece that aired last night. Vic did a great job on it!

YouTube - One Piece third op (funi dub)

I loved how, in the dub opening, they gave the opening title a gold finish instead of blue. Perhaps that has an underlying meaning to it? Kukuku~

On an interesting note (to me, at least) Tomato, one of the webmasters of Starmen.net, is part of the new team that's translating this show now.
I'll have to give it another chance now that it's not pure crap any more.

Mato, whatever.

He's got a lot on his plate, though, with translating Mother 3, too.

Yeah, Vic Mignogna doing an opening is rather odd. Even though it's kind of weird to have Edward Elric singing the opening to One Piece, I still liked it.

Oh! I found the ED theme too. It is also dubbed nicely. And with the way this new version of One Piece is going, if it is marketed correctly, it may even surpass Naruto in ratings. Either way, it deserves more ratings than it once had.

If this is the one on Saturday, then yeah, it is definately better. However, I'm so used to old voices, that it just wierded me out. The theme song is good, but I can't understand it all, although I always did like the Pirate Rap anyway.(it was funny, and catchy)

Zolo's new voice sounds almost like Yami Yugi's...at first, anyway, but it's not bad at all. A while back, they did a different theme song for One Piece, and I really liked that one. Too bad they only played it once or twice.

Luffy's voice is pretty good, despite my used-to-preference of the old one, but I digress. I like how interesting the story is getting. Although, it does seem like the story is taking way too long on each saga...not accusing of it of DBZing the story, but you know what I mean.

With a new episode comes new voices!

Buggy- His voice fits perfectly with him. It's deeper than his original voice, and his laugh is more sinister. Brilliant!

I love his quote "MEN, COMMENCE HAVING FUN AGAIN!!"

Oh, and his crew is also voiced rather well. No accents with them, either.

Alvita- No longer does she have a croaky with a southern accent. It's more... Snobby, like a spoiled young queen. It fits her quite well.

Ace- LOVE IT! His voice is perfect! It has the smooth tone you would expect from a bad-ass like him. Yet at the same time, he can be halarious at the turn of a dime. Gotta love his narcolepsy. XD

Pretty ****ing good. Just watched it. I liked Buggy's voice, it was well done. As well, everyone is much more tolerable. The music is even better. It's a marked improvement over a former pile of primordial bull****.

Shame Ace is still called 'Trace' though. It tolurable, as it does not have as bad of an impact as horrid voices would have had, but I just hope it's fixed for the DVD release.
