Bo x 7 is a series that probably never gets old. I find the manga incredibly entertaining, so provided they didn't botch anything up with the anime, it should be pretty good. I don't know if it's super long or what, though. It's original enough to keep me interested.

You scared me there. DiCaprio is signed on to co-produce it, not star in it. I have mixed feelings about the prospect of a live-action Akira.

I'm just wondering whether they'll go with the action-movie anime version or the complex politics of the actual manga.

Akira will be a fine live action. Worry about DBZ if you have worries, prayers would help too.

Thanks a bunch everyone for the suggestions. I think I'll go with Trigun, Ghost in the Shell, and Cowboy Beepop for now.

Bo-Bobo is awesome. The anime's much less bloody than the manga, but the humor is all there.

The manga was just a more confusing read of the same concepts, though. That's what I like about movies - good ones cut out the fluff, and point to the philisophical root. They hint at the political strife, but because that plot is secondary to the philisophical plot, it's put on the backburner. What they did in the movie that made sense, is they showed enough of the political situation to explain the events that allowed this all to occur - scientists not following orders, double dealing officials, etc. It might not have been as complex, but sometimes complexities do nothing but slow the direction of the plot.

I understand that the film was more focused on the plight of Tetsuo and his struggle to contain his emotion once he's granted the full potential of the human psyche. The obvious overtone of the film suggests that humans are not ready for infinite control, and should find deeper appreciation in their finite solutions. The political overtone behind that simply points out that self-minded agendas lead to an internally weak government. I'd compare the situation to an unstable computer OS like Windows 98 - there are glitches in the code, and rather than address the source, humans would rather write a fast-fix to circumvent the error. The result is a system dependent on malfunction. It's a critique of present-day governments in Japan and other top countries, but it's frivolous to the central plot.

What, because no one stands around talking for the majority of it? Film doesn't require words to speak, you've got to appreciate the value of the situation.

Akira's strong-points were the visual aspect of political strife - the riots, and the bombings. It could have easily been more tight-lipped about what was going on and let our eyes understand, it would have come out the same way. And seriously Tetsuo may have 'symbolised' the fall of man to power but really he was an underdevelopped character who only hinted at the root of his abuse by saying "why do always have to boss me arou-hound!?!?!?!?". Action movie.

Of course it's action based. Film is action based. He is characterised by his actions moreso than his words. He isn't meant to have the most brilliant linguistic abilities known to man; he's a dumb hooligan with an anti-authority complex.
