WHAT IS MUGEN? (baby don't hurt me)

Someone asked what MUGEN is and I will answer.

Q: WHAT IS MUGEN?

A: To put it into literal terms, MUGEN is a fighting engine.

Q: Fighting engine? Why don't I just play Street Fighter instead of M.U.G.E.N.

A: MUGEN is not a Fighting GAME it's a make your own fighting game!

Q: What?

A: Add your own Characters, Stages, Sceenpacks-

Q: AH! COMPUTER LINGO! KILL SELF!

A: no. NOOOOO. MUGEN is quite easy to get into. All you need is to download MUGEN and you're ready to begin!

Q: I'll say it again.....what?

A: -_-; Look go here for DOS and Linux versions, and here for the Windows version

Q: Wait, who's this tool?

A: I would like it if you refrained from calling Kung-Fu Man a tool. I think I'm on probation right now

Q: Whatever.

A: -_-; Could you pretend to show intrest? Kung Fu Man is like Wii Sports, he's your first character, comes out of the box, fresh and clean.

Q: But I don't want him!

A: You're making it look like I'm ripping off of the Comic Forum.

Q: I don't care.

A: -_- ok, start here it's the most child friendly

Q: how do I download the mo-

A: Say "Mothers" and I hit you. First you have to select the game you want.... let's try King of Fighters

Q: Wait, you mean people from real fighting games? How do you not get sued?

A: We'll get into that later....now, select one of the people from this list....like... Maxima, then click on on of these links you see from the newly opened window.

Q: Why is there more then on provider?

A: Because, Some of them are different, maybe one version is horribly broken, or has edited sprites. Usually it doesn't matter. Now, look for the MUGEN/ Characters Section, click on Maxima, then Download. Then seperate him either by using Winzip, or look here for the required "diver"

Q: You sure those aren't viruses?

A: do I LOOK infected?

Q: no

A: good, then it won't hurt you.

Q: AH! MY CHARACTER WON'T SHOW ON MUGEEEEEEEEN!

A: No problem, just find the name of your .def file and that it matches your directory...

Q: AH! MORE COMPUTER LINGO!

A: Shut it. I just mean find the .def file in the folder of your character.

Q: oh.

A: good, now stop wasting space. Now go to the select.def in data. Then go to [characters] than put the name of your character's .def file

EX: maxima, <the comma has to be there

Q: The character still won't show up

A: Ok, that I have never figured out, you may need the file name to match the .def name, but I've never tried it.

Q: Oh, it's working now, cool beans, Maxima kicks KFM's butt

A: Good to know you're having fun....

PART 2:

Q: The characters I got are nice, but I'm sick of this stage, Mountainside Temple hurts the eyes after a while

A: Ok, we'll just add more stages.

Q: OOOO! Get me something cool!

A: -_- How am I supposed to know you're preferences? Ok, the same place we got the characters can be used for Stages too. Here if you're too lazy to go up.

Q: Don't I already know that?

A: I'm expecting that you are not noticing anything above what you know. Anyway, Let's go to Street Fighter 2 and choose....Balrog's Stage. then we go to the website where it's hosted, then find the stage. then download. Isn't that easy? Oh, and put all of the contents in the download in the Stages Directory, not the folder, it's contents

Q: uh, The stage won't work!

A: As with the character you need to put it in the select.def in data. You can then do one of two things. One, you can make the stage for a certain character. And if you do, you have to do this....

EX: maxima, stages/balrog.def

Although, why you want Maxima's stage to be a casino is your problem....

Q: But what if I don't want that?

A: Then you can put it in extra stages. go to [ExtraStages] and just do this.

EX: stages/balrog.def

There, no muss, no fuss....

Q:WOW!

A: Yeah, bet you like that

Q: uh, new problem, I have 9 characters and 8 spots, do I have to delete one?

A: Ok, there IS a way to add more spots but let's say you hate the whole setup of your MUGEN

Q: You can change that? O_o

A: Most Certainly! Same place as the others ^ up there it's the only link so far...

Q: OK! Now what?

A: go to Misc. MUGEN Stuff, and you'll see "Screenpacks and Soubndpacks" Personally, I'd go with MUGEN Fighting Jam, lots of Characters....little space...
Ok, go to the site, find the Sceenpack, download. now don't put it in yet!

Q: Why? It's cool!

A: You may want to copy your data and font files
1. Because the font may not BE there
and 2. Because Select.def will be written over and you don't wanna do all that AGAIN!

Q: Oh.....ok, it's done! Coooool!

A: Now you have so many spaces!

Q: I'm downloading SO MANY CHARACTERS RIGHT NOW!!!!

A: Hope your RAM can hold it....

Part 3:

Q: HEY! I'm still scared of getting sued by the game companies!

A: Oh, you don't wanna mess, with the RI-double-A Oh, sorry, you said something?

Q: IS. THIS. ILLIGAL!?

A: no. RandomSelect Asked Capcom and SNK, and they're both fine with it as long as you don't sell your MUGEN.

Q: Ok....But, I been hearing about the term "Warehousing"

A: Warehousing is a pretty bad term in the MUGEN World

Q: Really? What is it?

A: It's the act of hosting the works of it's creator without his or her consent.

Q: Like Sprite Sheets?

A: More than you think.

Q: Ok, but it's not thier characters, right?

A: It's still looked down upon in the MUGEN world. And since the characters and stages are what MUGEN's about, people will retire from MUGEN because of warehousing. It's this reason that many people will do the worst to those who warehouse.

Q: Ok, but how can anyone stop this.

A: Well, many people have put into practice the act of trading, and asking permission to HAVE the characters. This may usually be because the author of these characters has left the scene, or the person doesn't want you downloadin' his stuff Publicly.

Q: Oh, well that explains a few things....

A: good.

Part 4:

Q: AH! What the? HEY!

A: What? is it crashing?

Q: No, I dowloaded a character and he's kicking all of my character's butts!

A: Well, you just may have a Cheap Character.

Q: Wait, Cheap?

A: Now, you didn't think MUGEN was perfect did you? Do you expect the Street Fighter one characters to be an even match for DRAGONCLAW? the Air Combo Master? (Dragonclaw can be found here)

Q: No, but what MAKES a character cheap....you know...to prove that I don't suck...

A: Well, the character has to have AI that takes advantage of everything, Ridiculous Damage, 1 hit KOs, too many invincibility frames, attack spamming, attack before the round starts, you know unfair stuff

Q: Ok, but Why? Why make these characters cheap?

A: That's more of a philisophical question. It could be horrible Favoritism (Said to be the reason behind Naruto-Kun and Sasuke-Kun). Messing around with code, or even intentional. Just to let you know, Cheapness isn't as looked down upon as Warehousing....unless it's a warehoused character edited to be cheap.

Q: Ok, but how do I beat him?

A: You can beat a "Cheap" character with anyone if you're good enough. But, then there are B-R-O-K-E-N Characters. Those SO bad, they kill you, your entire roster, and your dog.

Q: -_- I thought we weren't doing dog jokes

A: Anyway, if that's the case, you will need a CHEAP CHARACTER TO BEAT IT!

Q: So, I use a cheap character to beat....another cheap character?

A: You could also just delete the cheap character, but your pride is getting in the way. So, find a cheap character, like Zeeky Boogy Doog, or Nightmare SSJ3, and pummel him/her/it. (I'm not refencing these look at Judgespear Mugen central on "MUGEN sites" in this forum).

Q: Good now I can beat him!

A: you're welcome

WARNING: If you have no intention to make stages, characters, or videos, turn back now! NOW!

Q: Now that I've played on MUGEN, I want to be a part of it. How do I create a character, or something

A: Are you prepared for the bashings you may endure?

Q: Uh.....yeah....

A: good. Now, first we'll concentrate of palettes, but you need a character editor.

Q: But WinMugen has o-

A: lame. get the one here, it's cool.

Q: uh, ok but I don't know why...

A: IT's more user friendly (And I never used the one offered in WinMugen anyway) now to pallette editing!

Q: Yeah, what's a pallete?

A: The color of your fighter. now open your editor, and you'll be right at the palette. Then either create a new palette, or edit one that's offered, it's easy as long as you get the shading right. Try Experimenting to get the style that suits you!

Q: yeah, colors....Hey, I'm looking at these ANIMATIONS, and there's boxes all over the sprite!

A: Those are collision boxes

Q: AH! COMPUTER-

A: Are we not done with this horrible joke? Collision Boxes are what the game recognizes as "Where you're character can be hit, and where your character can hit others.

Q: oh, but what's with the colors?

A: Blue boxes show where your character can be hit, not having these makes your character INVICIBLE. that's bad.

Q: Like a broken character?

A: yes. now Red boxes show where you will inflict damage. Without these, you will not inflict damage, In other words, a punching bag. You will need to use common sense. Do you want your character to be hit when throwing? Doing a special? How about during a taunt?

Q: Thanks! Now I can mess with these things!

A: Don't wreck the character....

Part 5

Q: Ok, now with that other stuff...how do I make a character?

A: Well, I'm not really gonna get into making a character, because it's too computer-y

Q: I promise not to spaz about computer lingo.

A: I'm serious. I can't make heads or tails of some of it. (Plus I've never tried it.)

Q: can you at least tell me what I'd need

A: You'll need sprites, roughly 100-600 for the characters alone, depending on the animation and attacks, and at least another 400 spites for the special effects, like what appears when you hit your opponent, your projectiles, and the catches (<The stuff that happens when you activate a special)

Q: O_O whoa....

A: Then you'll want sounds, so that your attacks make sound, or so that your character talks. And you may also want to make a stage for that character which involves many moving parts to be seperated and added later.

Q: Ok, then what?

A: You still have that Fighter Factory, it's the MOST user freindly, you'll have to fiddle around before you get what you want. You may even need someone else to help you.

Q: Wait, someone else?

A: Sometimes MUGEN characters are made by one or more people, usually one person does the sprite and sound and animation and the other does the AI.

Q: But if I can do it myself, I should right?

A: It's an endless amount of potential in this game, so go explore!

OoC: -_- you know, this things only here to generate interest. And give information.

Part FINAL (And I know how many of you want this to end)

Q: Ok, now how do I get famous?

A: what?

Q: Don't copy me, how do I make those videos everyone makes?

A: You're saying that as if I make them... Anyway, first you need a program that will record the video you can pick from these choices....

Snagit

Windows Media Encoder

Hypercam

Fraps

Super Screen Capture

Q: Wait, Those say "Free Trial" or "Free"

A: Yeah, it's required to get this, so I recommend a free one, but if you want a not so free one, that's fine.

Q: Ok, now how do I get it to work

A: I said I haven't gotten one yet, so go here. They'll explain it better than I.

Q: Ok, so how do I generate attention?

A: There are 6 Ways I've seen

1. Beat Hard/ Cheap Characters: Though this is for more advanced MUGEN players, you can get a controller if you want to make it easier on yourself (Though, you'll probably break it). People like to see Cheap or Hard Characters go down, and it is seen alot in this community

2. Story: One thing not seen often in the MUGEN world is a story. Since MUGEN has all the characters, there is no place for an actual story at all. Which is why anything can happen.

3. Making a Character: If you made a character, you can show of his/her/it's coolness.

4. Surivival Runs: What's most impressive is that, you're so good with a character you can beat anyone with him. Which is where surivial comes in.

5. Fads: Fads require little problems, and are fun to do. But can be ran into the ground

6. RANDOMNESS: Whatever you feel like doing. Do it. Unless it's pornagraphic in nature.

Q: So, we're done?

A: Yep, this is all I need to tell people about MUGEN. If anyone believes I'm not good at this. It's because I'm not. If you need something not described in this video, PM me and I'll show you....I don't know....a tutorial

Q: We suck at FAQs

A: Shut up and wave.

(YOU COMPLETED the FAQ! Congradulations!)

Unlock: Boss Mode.

They're the same as Characters, just add them to the select in Data

And don't play as them...
