It was on the wall of my english room. sorta funny.
You haven't read where that actually came from, have you? It's really an inaccuracy. The quote "God is dead" came from a story that Nietzsche wrote as an analogy, and the character that said it followed it with "God remains dead. And we have killed him." This implies that God once existed. What Nietzsche was saying was that the morality for which God stood was no longer relevant in an ever-changing age, and people were sometimes rushing into technology and a new lifestyle without considering the old morality that they had previously held dear. It was the character that said that, not Nietzsche, and it was used as an analogy rather than as some sort of smart-assed remark. Nietzsche did not say "God is dead" anymore than Shakespeare said "to be, or not to be."

Well. I didn't expect anyone else to have the desire to explain that away. I just don't manage to care enough when it comes to "omg wittay" english teachers, anyway..

No I haven't read where I came from. I sort of figured that "God is dead" meant something along those lines. It was god's supposed response that Nietzche is dead that's funny, not the quote itself.

And if its in something he wrote, than yes, he did technically say it.

You're not grasping. Nietzsche's intent was that the moral structure of God in society had been undermined. That ritual persisted without purpose, in that modern society crossed its own religious restrictions. Trampling upon the concept of moral standards in the name of technology. "Nietzsche is dead" a comeback to an insult that was never there.. is just foolish. Nietzsche(or rather, a written character in a piece of fiction intended to make social statement) did not ever attempt to claim that the moral indignation was no longer possible in the name of God. Simply that it did not exist by the same means. He nearly asserted that God was, in modern culture, misrepresented and ignored. This would make God, or by this chance the original author of such words, look foolish and ignorant.

Sidenote: I still love the quote, because it stinks of the modern pseudo-intellectual "prowess" of your everyday would-be philosopher.
...The sort of thing that speaks "The work of a scholar should be left to the scholarly"
