A Brief History Lesson on the Battle Board

The Battle Board was created by Kyle for SMBHQ in mid-1999, not long after I registered. The board was created because SMBHQ Main was being flooded with battle topics, most of which were started by me. To my knowledge, 1999 was certainly the Battle Board's best year. Of course, shortly after '99, I unofficially left VGF and only appeared on occasion, so I could be wrong. But I remember that the "Golden Age," the period that housed legendary members such as myself, Curt, Christi, NntendoGrl, Metal Kong, Chibi Yoshi, and many others saw many a battle started.

Upon my registration, I immediately began a rivalry with the most-hated member of the SMBHQ Main, MASTERMARIO. The battle became quite heated at times, as we found ourselves throwing verbal attacks at each other in nearly ever topic on the board. On my second day at VGF, I found that a new member had registered and was bashing MASTERMARIO along with me, continually referring to him as MASTER "BATE". I quickly formed a friendship with I'm-A-Luigi-Number-1, known to most VGFers simply as Curt.

The first battle topic in VGF history, created by Curt, pitted the two of us against MASTERMARIO. No winner clearly emerged, and Curt and I eventually formed a truce with MASTERMARIO, leading to one of VGF's first cliques. More battle topics were periodically created to settle differences.

Soon afterwards, SMBHQ was being torn apart by even more feuds, namely one between me and a new member by the name of NntendoGrl. Friends of both members got involved, the feud ensued until an 8-Character Elimination Battle topic was started. At this point, Kyle, then the sole webmaster of SMBHQ, decided to start a Battle Board to prevent SMBHQ Main from being cluttered with battle topics. The Battle Board was of course highly active, with several battles taking place at a time.

Eventually, the Battle Board became an annoyance to many members, leading to a period where Curt felt excessively guilty, citing that since he started the first battle topic, he was solely responsible for the creation of the Battle Board. Shortly thereafter, I unofficially left VGF and only posted on rare occasions.

If I remember correctly, the Battle Board was replaced by the NC Forum. The Battlefield we have at VGF today presents an immensely evolved form of the old Battle Board battles. Unfortunately, not all VGF members have the time to engage in Battlefield topics, as posting in them requires a good deal of writing. Perhaps the return of the Battle Board will give today's VGFers a quick, less time-consuming alternative to the Battlefield.

Also, this board was also used to settle arguements, to prevent them from spreading throughout the forums. So not every topic needs to be in RPG battle format, for the record.

Hm. By comparison, the evolved Battlefield was created due to battles made in the Nintendoland forum. Back then a Nintendo Battlefield League was formed, consisting of famous and infamous people like myself. We had a weekly battle, and they rocked, mainly because everyone who signed up could only battle in them.

Then Shane was nice enough to make not one, but two battlefields; a Nintendo one and a Sega one. The Sega one had only one battle that really went anywhere; the Candy battlefield. I wish for it to come back so that I can continue that topic, which got up around 50 pages before dying (when Jolteon left.)

The Nintendo one was where almost everyone went, and the last of the Hyrule Battlefields wound up there. Unfortunately, everyone else got worn out while I took my battling to IRC (Super Smash Quest.) Even worse, Nintendoland died and most of the people who battled began to lose interest. I had technically switched alignments to SMBHQ when I took over SSQ 3 years ago, and with the death of most of its supporters (and end of Wyborn's battling) The Nintendo Battlefield is mostly defunct.

I am a relic from those times, and still practice the old ways. I was always around at the wrong time; they were dying when I learned them, dead when I really had practice, and now that I'm good enough to have a real fight, the whole thing is dead. I wish to revive the Sega Battlefield in my own image and revive my style of battling from death.

So, these two forums, ironically, went throughout time without ever colliding, because your history is entirely new to me, while mine consists of a dedicated Nintendoland thing dying over time.

The RP forum had tons of topics like that. and the battlefield had more free style writing fights.

.... Seems rather pointless to me.
