REVIEW #7: Spongebob Squarepants: Legend of the Lost Spatula (Video Game)
So, in 2000, Spongebob got a GBC game based on his first season... and I must say, it's much better than any subsequent SB games.
That's the intro, so now I won't have to explain the story to you.
Anyway, you start the game in front of your house, and you can go through Bikini Bottom and talk to the locals to figure out how to play the game. Certain NPCs, like Mrs. Puff, will be very valuable to you. Once you've gotten the hang of the (awkward) controls, head over to Goo Lagoon to get your game started.
There are 6 chapters:
1. Goo Lagoon - Goo Lagoon is the prologue. It's a bit weird, because Goo Lagoon is technically part of the HUB, but it behaves like a normal level. Here, you'll get items like the Net Launcher, and the all-important map.
2. Jellyfish Fields
3. Undersea Desert
4. The Carnival
5. Kelpazoic Jungle
6. Rock Bottom - This stage is unlocked after finding all the oven knobs. Once you go here, you can't turn back.
7. Dutch Under - A Hell-esque stage. I think it's a shortened version of "Dutchman's Underworld", but that's just conjecture. Name aside, this is where the final boss lies. This stage gave me a lot of trouble.
The ending is really crummy, unfortunately.
I really like the concepts of the game: Explorable HUB with interactive NPCs, revisiting levels, side quests, collectible/upgradable/where-the-hell-is-it items, interchangable weapons, sub-linear level order, multiple paths, etc. However, some things weren't quite executed to their full potential. For example, the menus can be a tad annoying, not just due to the quantity of them, but also the annoying 'selection' sound effect. The controls are somewhat bizzare, and the bosses are too hard and easy at the same time.
Shortcomings aside, this game is pretty great. The graphics and music are great. I think, if you find this game somewhere for under $10, then you should purchase it.
