RUMOR PATROL:

Ibuki and Makoto are being considered. No clue if this is true or not, just something I heard. I want to believe it, but I have no clue.

I HOPE Q GETS IN. AND DUDLEY. BUT MOSTLY Q.

I just hope they explain/connect Q, maybe he's Bison perhaps? I wouldn't necessarily mind if he's not in this game.

Looks pretty good, I'll need me a 360.

Practice up, S_K.

Yeah, the reason I want Q in for more than any other reason, in his plot.

I mean, wtf is he? Human? Robot? Why does he wear that mask? He's by far the most interesting SF character, IMO.

Also, I am actively considering spending $500 for this game.

sorry, but Ibuki and Hugo (I think Hugo... Definitely ibuki though Edit: It might have been makoto, Alex, or Urien, on second thought.) have a chance of getting in (they won this poll thing awhile back). They have already said Dudley is not in the game :/ I guess two black boxers is too many (ignores DJay).

They do intend to eventually release downloadable characters I think, maybe dudley and Q can get in then.

Also Ryu/Ken's master is a character in the game. Hes like a bizarro shoto.

But Dudley is better than Balrog, Balrog sucks.

Also, I never found source on Gouken being in the game, but I've heard it.

Also also, I've never seen the poll for SF3 characters, but I did see it for SFA characters (Cammy won, I voted for Dan).

Srsly Hugo? But Hugo is an awful character. I really hate Grapplers, and I won't accept both Hugo and Zangief being in the game.

Edit: Also, I haven't said it yet: Shun Goku Satsu looks ****ing awesome.

Satsui no hado again? Well, we already know Ryu doesn't need it by the time we get to SF3.

Rose, Fei Long and Gen (I think that's Gen?) confirmed for console versions.

25 Characters, doesn't look like Ibuki made it in, after all.

Oh, also, Seth is playable. ****ing better be banned on Online.

Yeah, but it wasn't mentioned in this thread.

Technically I was late for announcing Gen and Rose, too, though.

Also, Cammy. I don't think she was confirmed before, but everyone knew she was getting in.

Bleh, I would've liked Ibuki over Rose, but Gen is a nice addition.

!

Nice, I just came up with a good idea. I can buy this as a birthday present for my brother (April). When we were kids (or when I was, he's 7 years older than me), we snuck into our parents' bedroom on Christmas Eve, opened the Genesis we were supposed to wait on, and played SF2 Championship Edition all night. It would be an appropriate gift, cause I don't feel like getting a 360 of my own.

Actually, wouldn't Rose existing break all canon up to this point?

On the other hand, Gouken being alive and not dead does that too :/

You wouldn't think anything productive would come from a series of mistranslations, improvised backstories, and outright plagiarism, but you'd be wrong. The story of Sheng Long's a hallowed tale, well documented in the annals of gaming history. Born from a translation error and perpetuated by a legendary gag from our very own EGM, Sheng Long (or Gouken, as he's officially called now) finally makes his first playable appearance in Street Fighter 4. To accompany these new Gouken screens, we figured we'd delve into the past and see exactly how he made the jump from an April Fools' gag into an actual character.

1991: Street Fighter 2 appears in arcades, with the English-language machines featuring a mistranslation of Ryu's victory dialogue: "You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance." The first two characters in the Japanese reading of Ryu's deadly Dragon Punch, Shoryuken, were mistakenly translated into Mandarin -- "Sheng Long" -- instead of English, making it seem as if Ryu was referring to a person instead of his signature special move.

992: EGM publishes the now-infamous April Fools' joke, presenting a fake strategy against Street Fighter 2 head baddie M. Bison -- spar with the Shadaloo dictator for 10 rounds without actually hitting him or taking damage -- that would allegedly unlock Sheng Long as the true end boss. The joke widely spread as fact in the gaming community, despite the fact that it's virtually impossible to actually pull off the trick in question. Interestingly enough, the completely fabricated moves described in the article -- the flaming Dragon Punch, red fireball, and air throw -- would all appear in later versions of the game.

1992: Street Fighter 2 hits the Super NES, and while the mistranslation of Ryu's quote is fixed, the manual authors -- desperate to pad out the characters' paper-thin backstories -- take some liberties, referring to Ryu and Ken's master as the aforementioned Sheng Long.

1993: A manga adaptation of Street Fighter 2 introduces a character named Gouken, who becomes the first actual representation of Ken and Ryu's sensei. Soon after Gouken's debut, though, M. Bison offs him, setting up a horribly hackneyed "you killed my master" plot for Ryu. Capcom dismisses this backstory and creates its own for Gouken, tying him in with a new addition to the game's roster.

1994: Akuma is introduced in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo as a hidden playable character and secret boss -- and described as the younger brother of Gouken (who had, at this point, been adapted from the manga and became the official sensei of Ken and Ryu, effectively putting an end to the Sheng Long name). Akuma's red fireball, secret unlocking procedure, and status as a hidden final boss are all very similar to the EGM April Fools' article, leading many to speculate that he was created as a response to the joke.

1995: Street Fighter: The Movie, the ill-fated game adaptation of the live-action movie that was based on the game (pause for a minute and let that soak in), debuts in arcades and on the Sega Saturn. Sheng Long is referenced in three different endings as the master of Ken and Ryu and the brother of Akuma. A 2007 forum post from a former developer on Street Fighter community site Shoryuken.com mentions that Sheng Long was nearly included in the game, with the developers going so far as to mo-cap an actor -- before Capcom changed its mind and decided not to include him.

1995/1996: Street Fighter Alpha 1 and 2 fleshed out more of Gouken's backstory, explaining that he and Akuma were pupils of a martial artist named Goutetsu. Goutetsu taught them both an ancient assassination martial art -- Akuma succumbed to its murderous nature (or "Dark Hadou"), while Gouken modified the style to be defensive and nonlethal. Akuma eventually killed Goutetsu and later Gouken, but not before Gouken had trained both Ken and Ryu.

2007: Capcom unveiled Street Fighter 4. There was much rejoicing.

2008: In EGM's January 2008 issue, Street Fighter 4 producer Yoshinori Ono hints at the inclusion of Gouken in Street Fighter 4 with the statement: "Let's just say that [jokes] that your magazine have reported in the past might find their way into the game as fan service."

2008: Capcom officially announces Gouken as an unlockable and playable secret character in Street Fighter 4. Not bad for a dude born of mistranslation, an April Fools' joke, and retconned fan fiction!

Tuesday, February 17th (possibly 18th).

Unfortunately, if you didn't pre-order Special Edition, it's probably gone. They're literally running out. Demand for non-Special is a little less, you may be able to pre-order one if you do it ASAP.

Special Edition comes with

-Ryu's headband
-65 minute anime movie (Blu-Ray for PS3)
-Comic book detailing the story and moves of new characters
-5 Downloadable Costumes
-Collectable Figurine (C. Viper for 360, Ryu for PS3)

February 21st, Saturday. Biggest Street Fighter tournament ever.

2,500 Gamestops will be hosting a tournament. Winner gets a headband and two wristbands, and goes on to one of 250 locations. Winner gets a SF4 Controller, and goes onto one of few locations. Winner of that gets SF4 Arcade Stick, a paid trip to San Francisco.

Winner of that gets SF4 Machine.
