I don't know if it's a bannable offense (Yet), but you should NEVER steal sprites because a) Stealing sprites is a bannable offense on other forums like TPS. b) You can get on the bad side of the spriter. c) LVK and/or MK will lock the topic d) It is disrespectful to the creator/editor e) For every stolen sprite, the bigger your chance of getting screwed. There are some occasions in which you may use someone else's sprites: 1) They give you permission to use them 2) The sprite sheet is labeled "Public Domain". 3) They are game sprites from a site like The Shyguy kingdom or The People's sprites. 4) You give credit to the creator for making them. Ask permission to use a sprite sheet if: 1) They have a tag that says "Please do not steal" or "Please give credit". 2) They are found in a gallery/custom sprite section on a sprite site or a site for custom sprites like http://spriters.captainn.net . 3) The spriter says "Do not use without permission". If you are using someone else's sprites, do NOT: 1) Make them stupid unless they say so. That's bascially making some people get the wrong opinion of them. 2) Make them stupid and bash them. That's bascially telling the person "You are a ****ing moron." 3) Criticize their spriting skills. That is not very respectful, and don't ask for permission for someone's sprites just so you could say "you can't sprite to save your grandmother". That is very disrespectful, and if you are going to give constructive criticism, just tell it to them instead of going to all that trouble to belittle or insult them. 4) Edit their sprites without their permission. (Especially if they're scratch sprites) And do NOT Edit the sprites of them yourself (Like if it's a pallette swap) so you would be using your own work and not stealing their sprites so you can get past that rule. That STILL counts as using them without permission. Using game sprites Don't steal the sheet and say you ripped it. This is NOT Fireball20xl*, where you could have gotten away with it, and you can get in trouble from the webmaster(s) of the website hosting the sprite. Ripping Extracting sprites from a RoM using an emulator (ripping) is not considered sprite theft, but emulation is illegal unless you own the original copy. That doesn't stop most people, but there are apparantly legal RoMs out now. *When Fireball20xl had a sprites section, a huge number of those sheets were stolen and when they were reported, Psy wouldn't do a damn thing. And I'm sure you all know how it feels to have your sprite(s) stolen without permission-Mr. Woffums stole like 16 of us and forced us to play a role in his comic. If you see a stolen sprite(s), then report it to LVK. [ August 08, 2004, 12:24 AM: Message edited by: Digi ] |

The policy I use for downoading roms is kind of like "If they're not making any money out of it anymore, then I can download it". I download SNES roms, but not GBA ones. Meh. Kamek can be considered a sprite thief, then? he "stole" Max and WvsW's sprites, didn't he? |

Those are technically legal roms, although I don't know how the companys make money off of those old games (Unless they re-release them like the Classic NES Series on GBA, or a collection like Sonic Mega Collection). ![]() __________________ BETTER EXECUTE SOONER |

And I feel sorry for Max and DVG. They were bashed and picked on like there was no tomorrow, and even though they did sorta bring it upon themselves, they really didn't deserve all of that. (You know what I mean) Oh, I also forgot something-Let me fix that. And let me look for that site with the legal RoMs. [ August 08, 2004, 12:26 AM: Message edited by: Digi ] | |

Not only will people bash you for trying to take credit, but the owner will make you pay. Never put someone else's picture on your site unless: A) You give credit to whoever drew the pictures. B) The artist gives you permission to put it on your site. (Credit should still be given) Art trades are different: You say you did an art trade with whomever, and post it. Anything else? Well, if you steal my drawings (I don't know why...), I'll kill you. plz dnt kthx ![]() [ September 05, 2004, 09:32 PM: Message edited by: LvK138 ] |

If it took a lot of work to rip the sprites (say, a Mortal Kombat game whith a lot of sprite positionings), they probably want bredit because of the work. If you just take it, then you sir, are a sprite thief. |

The makers of edits and scratches certianly can't be taken from, but a recolor like Dave Anez's "dave" or "Bob" is made of is kinda different. You couldn't make a main character out of his characters, of course, because then you are stealing the idea of the character, but for a 2-second clip in an animation I don't think that would be a problem. It's not like they put any work into the sprite. Technically, yo'd probably want to recolor it yourself using your own pallete with the same colors, thogh. But I'm not sure. Anyone else have any ideas on this subject? |
