Old School

Being stuck without any kind of gaming computer has coincided quite well with my brain deciding to go on an old school gaming kick. In the last few weeks I've played through Monkey Island 1, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, and Wasteland (post-apocalyptic RPG, precursor to Fallout). I'm currently playing Ultima IV.

It's funny, but with the exception of my recent purchase of a DS, this is probably the most excited I've been about gaming in a looong time.

Anyone else got any old school favorites or recent back-in-time delves? I've still got a huge list of games to play (Ultima V-VII, System Shock 1 & 2, Deux Ex, FFIV-VI) and I haven't even been looking.

That one's on my list, but it's too slow to run in DosBox on this (OS X) laptop.

I know your pain, mate.

Otherwise... try Dosgames.com. There are tons of swell games there.

That's a good one. Abandonia and the-underdogs are also nice. Underdogs for selection; Abandonia for web design that doesn't murder babies and put them on stakes.

Millenium
Armada 2525
Reunion
SimEarth
Dune 2
Mechwarrior (the very first!)
Lemmings
Infocom Treasure Chest

....and I have all of these and much, much more. I still have the old Blood Bowl game that I bummed off my brother when he got tired of it, just for the sake of having it. To say nothing of my old original copy of SimAnt, or the first Warcraft.

....all these strategy killing things games. I'm a violent, violent girl. BLOOD AND DEATH.

Ahem.

AI and myself are always playing through some older game or another. Currently, we're playing Shivers 2 (which is a lot of fun), and we play StarCraft matches all the time.

Glad I've started a bit of a discussion here.

Most of the stuff I'll be playing in the near future will probably be RPGs, adventure games, and story-based FPSs. Mainly because I've played a lot of the old strategy games, whereas my RPG history starts at Baldur's Gate/FFVII/Diablo.

Civilization games were always great (and can't forget Alpha Centauri), but Masters of Orion was also brilliant. Did anyone else play Master of Magic?

Re: Blood Bowl. That game had so many problems, but my friends and I still had a lot of fun with it. There's actually a new one in development, with (shockingly!) massively upgraded graphics, but it still sticks to its turn-based roots. There are even versions planned for the PSP and DS.

I don't have a huge old-skool PC gaming background, but Castles II, Lords of the Realm II, and King's Bounty always tickled my fancy. Of course those are strategy games, but the only RPG I see missing in the lists above is the amazing Daggerfall.
