Endless amusement creating horrible monsters. You can't do a whole lot with them and there aren't that many parts, but it still rules. Oh, and don't make anything too dirty and put it online. My friend did and they banned him for a week. Just a heads-up. |

I downloaded the Creature Creator trial version today. It's pretty cool even with the trial. I'm definitely going to buy the full (Creature Creator only just because it's $10) I'll show you my two creations tomorrow (A generic monster and DEEP CROW from Penny Arcade) when I get all the colors down. |

The idea of them is taking a creation that you created almost entirely from scratch and you guide it through life, and you get addicted to these sorts of games, like The Sims, World of Warcraft, the whole Tycoon series and perhaps to a lesser extent GTA. |

Open-endedness is probably the single greatest factor in determining replay value. Games like the Sims have nearly limitless replay, because you can go about playing it so many different ways. |

I like me some options but not just for options sake. |

You get to do whatever you want, but with no reason for it, other than sheer giggles. |

| Senior Member | This creature pwns. I'm wondering how advanced the evolution of your animals can get like will they build cities and stuff? I've seen the tribes but I haven't heard anything yet about the cities and smarter intelligence. IRHP, maybe the reason you got bored with the sims so quickly is because you cheated. This is just a maybe, but cheating in that game was the one thing that took away the longevity for the games, not the open-endedness itself. I fail to see how open-endedness alone can bring down longevity of a game. This game is also supposed to have expansion packs (how I have no clue). Last edited by Jesus; 07-02-2008 at 12:04 PM. | ||

To me, it's a lazy development strategy to call meaningless options true gameplay... |

First: you didn't watch that Spore clip that came out a while ago? Your creatures end up exploring and fighting on a galactic scale. It goes way beyond the tribal stuff, at least two or three tiers. Second: maybe you can't "win" a game like the Sims, but that doesn't mean it's totally pointless. Maybe you have to set your own goals-- for example, getting to the last tier of the career track-- but what's wrong with that? And you know when you're "doing well" or "doing poorly," even if there's no definite objective. If your Sim's mood meter is totally in the red, you're screwing up. Or, say, if everybody moved out of your SimCity and you're bankrupt without any chance of recovery, you've screwed up. These games are about playing them, not necessarily winning them. Besides, you can sort of "win" each tier of Spore by reaching the next tier. Maybe the last tier is a total sandbox, but I'm not sure. I think you're still doing the same kind of galactic diplomacy/warfare thing, there's just no next tier to reach. Third: WarioWare is a kickass party game. No one will tell me otherwise. And single-player was fun for a while too. Plus there is tons and tons of **** to do and unlock, some of which is actually worth it. Fourth: What do you mean, "besides fun?" Isn't that what most games are about? (Unless you're CK, in which case I don't want to have this argument with you because that was awful.) |

But where does this fun come from? It's different for everyone. Mindlessly mashing buttons or repetitive tasks aren't my idea of fun, or at least not for long. I am not saying it's a bad game or anything from these sandbox games are, I just don't expect much from them besides the same old infinite repitition...multiplayer saves such titles but that's it for me. |

I don't care if they're just happy all the time and I gotta keep 'em that way just 'cause. =D |
