So...when does Team Fortress 2 get good?

Because it's only $10 for a game that everyone is saying "OMG THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER", "OMG THIS GAME HAS APPEAL TO EVERYONE!", and among other things, I actualy gave this game a try. One thing I have to say is....

....when does it get good? So far I've yet to really have any fun with it. I've been going to servers and have easily blocked a bunch of Screamers and people playing those stupid BONK songs. (Ronald McGiygas is the only one that belongs.) I have been experimenting with classes as people have told me to, and so far the only ones that have been any remote fun have really been Pyro and heavy. I think maybe I've just been too spoiled by Bioshock or Undying and that sorta stuff. Doesn't really appeal to me at all.

I'm giving it a shot, like I've said. I got a friend playing on a server that's thankfully devoid of screamers, cock-measurers and micspammers.

When searching for a server, find one that actually cycles the maps. If it says anything like "24/7 blahblah," don't bother (at least to start). Make sure you're filtering so you're not getting p/w protected servers and make sure the VAC filter is set to "ON."

The easiest classes to "learn" the basiscs are probably heavy, medic, and pyro. After that: Demos, Snipers, Soldiers. After them: Engineers, spies. Don't bother until they fix it: Scout.

Trick is to not jump classes every other round. Pick one and try to figure it out. Heavy is simple as hell: spin the barrel and mow down enemies. Medic takes a little attention. Basically, pair up with a heavy and constantly charge him. With the Pyro, basically you want to hide around corners and use surprise. Any map with chokepoints or interior buildings are great for pyros. You will die alot but you should also kill alot.

I don't like the demo or soldier classes. Demos are really effective, but I never could get good at using the weaponry. Soldiers IMO aren't accurate enough. They're good at clearing out engineer stations, but outside of that I suck with them. Snipers are self explanatory, except that your shots do more damage the longer you're scoped in.

Engineers are really fun once you get used to them. Basically, you just want to build all sorts of crap. I'd recommend googling a player guide before trying to play an engineer just to see what you can do and good combinations.

Spies are extremely hard to play. I wouldn't recommend them until you play enough to know how to effectively play as a spy.

Scouts have potential to be fun, but the class really doesn't have much of a role outside of a team scout-rushing some noobs and quick-capping the map. The Scout is the next major update, so hopefully they'll fix him.

So far it's looking up since I'm seeing some servers in which half the players aren't stoned, drunk, spawn camping, or playing those stupid "BONK" songs. (Ronald McGiygas should automatically counter any BONK songs)

Thank you Lurch for actually being constructive when I asked when TF2 got good. Most people went and flamed me like a Pyro because apparently, TF2 has a fanbase comparable to Final Fantasy VII in terms of Loyalty. (Then again what do I expect out of a Valve game.)

Things are looking up, so maybe instead of giving the game a 4/10 I'd give it a 5/10. Doesn't mean it's in the clear yet. I'm giving it a chance, and it can just as easily be another garbage FPS but at least it's not another waste of my money like FarCry 2 was. (I only paid $10 for This.)

That's the downside of a multiplayer only game: you're entirely dependent on who you play with.

As far as value goes, TF2 just seems to give me the most multiplayer bang for the buck for shooters. $50? Ripoff. $10-$20? Solid buy.

Another thing that helps is to try to find a server that's actually moderated by the owners. You're less likely to see them get flooded with voice-crap.

Trick is if you find a good server, save it under favorites. This at least helps you filter through the really bad servers.

You almost have to go outside of Valve communities to get feedback on a Valve game. I like Valve games, I think they're pretty much top tier in their respective genres, but I can easily see that TF2 may be hard to get into or may not appeal to people. Truth be told, I don't really like CS anymore (this plus the next three strips about sums it up: Concerned #40: Friday, August 12, 2005 ).

Yep. he's even summing up online gaming.

"pretty much".

Of course thse actually are outside valve communities I've been flamed. I guess that's what happens, cept that I've yet to run into people like this for World of Warcraft or Guild Wars. (Seems they do a good enough job of containing the fanboys.)

Honestly your problems seem to be with online fps's themselves rather then tf2 specifically. You will never escape internet retards no matter what game you play. Try to find a good server without too many of those guys and see if it gets any better.

Also Lurch the scout is like the 3rd-4th best class why would it need fixed.

he never said TF2 was $50, he was referring to the fact that TF2 was more fun than other shooters, and at a better price.

FFS no it isn't. They die very quickly, and they aren't nearly as effective enough to be used. There's a reason you rarely even SEE Scouts in game. Quick-caps are cool, and they're good if you're doing capture the intelligence maps, but outside of that they're pretty ****ty as a whole. They're on par with the Sniper, as only situational and map specific. All of the other classes (meaning not the Scout and not the Sniper) are universally good in almost any situation.

People outside of MMO games harass and mock the MMO players. People outside of Valve's games still admit they're decent at worst.

Gotta admit a lot of Valve players seem to be really angry drunks. No sober person would ever use all of Carlin's 7 words (Minus Tits, since that's not even that bad sounding) when there's a bunch of pyros spawn-camping the base.

(Hey, figured I'd drop by.)

I dunno Lurch, I actually play a lot of Scout. It's one of the more exciting classes. It is hard to get kills before dying yourself, but they can be surprisingly effective on defense and you can outmaneuver your enemies on a lot of maps. Also they can lay decent ambushes... not as well as pyros, but unlike pyros they can get out of there if something goes wrong. They are useless when attacking engineer positions though, which means they suck when you're on attack in payload maps or ones like Steel.

I agree about playing heavy, medic, and pyro at first. Medics are useful and relatively simple and you won't die much. Heavy is a lot of fun-- you're a huge Russian dude with a minigun and you can tank damage like crazy. Pyro is good for beginners too. Just try to avoid rushing in headlong with your flame on, since you'll get mowed down by any half-decent player with a combat class (heavy, demo, soldier, even other pyros). Jump down from roofs or out from around corners, you'll do a lot better that way.

Personally I love TF2. I've been addicted to it for a couple months, although I played more during my fall semester than I am now during the break. The fact that it's so cheap (ten bucks now? Damn) just makes it that much of a better value.

As Lurch explained, you have a server problem, not a game problem.
Make sure you:
1) Take the time to play one of every class on every map type (Payload, Cap, CTF).
2) Realise that dying often is an inherent part of the Scout, Pyro and Spy. No matter how good you get, situations will come up which will involve either an incredible amount of risk or make a suicide run a necessity.
3) Watch what other players do. The best class to do this is as a Medic, since you can just hang around other players and help whilst learning.
4) Don't focus on getting achievements. Just enjoy and let the game flow, and you'll get the unlockables eventually.
5) Pick a class to play for any particular session, and only change if your team needs it.
6) Get a mic.
7) Learn where the "Mute Player" toggle is. (Hint: It's in the ESC menu under Player List or Mute Players)

The Scout doesn't really have a useful role outside of capturing points or grabbing briefcases and running it back. The speed isn't really much of an advantage if you have a heavy with the upgraded gun or even a pyro or two.

I've killed enough good scouts to know they don't own everything.

For starting out, scout would probably be the very last class I'd suggest to anyone (maybe engineer actually, since a bad engineer can **** the team more than a mediocre scout).

Outside of maps where you want to capture something quickly, I really don't see how the scout is more valuable than another class.

The Scout fell down even more with the upgrades to the Heavy and Pyro. Pyro was already a scout-killer since he could just burn them, but the Heavy's new gun with the speed killer absolutely nerfs the Scout almost to the point of uselessness.
