I love this game, myself. In terms of game design, it is sublime.

I managed to unlock all of the secret rooms and loot the Lost City of Gold. All in under 500 deaths.

I despise this game. When I used to play it, though, I found it incredibly addicting. NetHack had the same effect on me; I guess I just don't 'get' roguelikes. =/

I liked the variety of interaction between objects (e.g using the woman to kill spiders, crushing shopkeepers with blocks, killing bats with ropes) and the procedurally generated levels. Although I hated it, I kept playing, because each time I played, there was some new place in the game's probability space to explore.

There need to be more platformers with procedural generation. If there were such a game in the vein of, say, Cave Story or Super Mario Bros., I would be in love.

Yeah, this is a true sandbox game, man. Not that crap from Grand Theft Auto or Far Cry 2.

This game is just like the other Roguelikes I've played... I love it to death but I'm awful at it and I'll probably never beat it.

Yeah, those ice levels are a bitch if you don't have the proper equipment.

What I like about these games is that there's no experience points or things to unlock in-game; all of the progress you make is based on the real experience in your own head. For example, you have a better feel for the risk-reward mechanic behind purchasing the cape now vs. buying the jetpack later. You learn to slow down in front of cliffs and look down before jumping onto a pile of spikes.

There's no fake improvement like levelling up your characters or getting a new weapon with more DPS -- that's just throwing you a bone in lieu of actual feelings of accomplishment. You become a better gamer by playing this game.

the ice levels are by far the hardest level set, having a compass is necessary. basically if you don't have enough helpful items you are dead like 90 percent of the time because their is too much instant kill bull****.

on the other hand the ice levels are the best place for altar farming and the giant aliens have a jetpack behind them 100% of the time.

Won a game today. That brings my win total to 6 out of 548.
Spoiler Below
Also, I broke into the City of Gold with 99 bombs and I walked away like a bandit: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...09-07-28-1.jpg . Totally worth it.

actually it is. beating nethack once can take like a year, or more, i've never heard of anyone failing to beat spelunky in less then 500 deaths

speaking of which

early jetpack, but no gun until a pistol in the ice caves :smug:

could have gotten to the lost city of gold actually, but i skipped the crown. I ended up losing the ankh in the boss room anyway so.

(Note: its actually more like 200 tries, i played about half my games on a different computer)

Beat it! Woo! Took between 200-250 tries. I did use the shortcut though, not sure if that's looked down upon. My score wasn't very high of course.

its not looked down upon so much as it is a bad idea in general, getting early items and money and having a chance to get to the black market is more important then starting lower.

on the other hand you can skip the ice levels entirely
