3D Realms CEO Teases Duke Nukem 'Resurgence' in Coming Years

3D Realms CEO Teases Duke Nukem 'Resurgence' in Coming Years

Quote:
It's been a rough decade for Duke Nukem (and a particularly tough year for developer 3D Realms), but it looks like 2010 will be the start of a comeback for the flat-topped action hero of so many cringe-inducing one-liners -- or at least that's what 3D Realms has planned. Speaking in the first issue of Gamesauce magazine (via Shacknews), CEO Scott Miller reveals that they have a number of new Duke Nukem games in the works.

"The next few years should see a strong resurgence in Duke," Miller says. "There are numerous other Duke games in various stages of development, several due out this year. We are definitely looking to bring Duke into casual gaming spaces, plus there are other major Duke games in production. Almost all of these [projects] are unannounced."

While Miller wouldn't specify what the projects were, it's likely a couple of them are the two remaining iPhone Duke Nukem games Miller promised earlier this year. Then there's Duke Nukem Trilogy in the works for Nintendo DS and PSP, and according to Shacknews, a rumored port of Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project for Xbox Live Arcade. And on top of all that, last month 3D Realms released an image from what was apparently a new game called "D-Day," with "Duke Nukem" teasing on his Facebook page that he "doesn't stay down for long."

And finally, in what must be a grand cosmic joke by now, Miller also restated that Duke Nukem Forever still isn't technically canceled, either. "Yes, we released the internal team, but that doesn't correlate to the demise of the project," he said.

So with all this Duke coming, let's just cross our fingers that they'll all be worth the (hopefully not decades-long) wait in the end.
I wanna bet on Duke.

This is hilarimouse. They should always keep Duke Nukem Forever on life support as a giant industry in-joke. Every E3, new trailers with new game engines. They can release Duke Nukem: High Five and Duke Nukem: Six Pack of Bullets, but Forever is forever.

The Voice of Duke Nukem Facetiously Confirms Duke Nukem Forever

Quote:
The Duke himself has all but confirmed Duke Nukem Forever in a recent panel discussion at MAGfest. A fan asked Jon St. John, the voice of Duke Nukem, about the status of the mythical game. "I'm not allowed to speak on that subject, sir," St. John explained. "He's asking about Duke Nukem Forever, let me go ahead and tell you right now that I’m not allowed to talk about Dukem Nukem Forever. The crowd of course groaned in disappointment to the statement, to which St. John facetiously responded, "No, no, don’t be disappointed. Read between the lines. Why am I not allowed to talk about it?"

If you watch the video shown after the break, you'll understand that there's a subtle (or maybe less subtle than intended) undertone implying that the game is still in the works.
God damn, I hope so.

Fun fact: John St. John (the voice of Duke Nukem) also provided the voice of Big the Cat in Sonic Adventure.

^ It's actually a story about the failure of the project, but it's mostly new footage to me, at least.

Rumor: Duke Nukem Forever Back in Development at Gearbox

Quote:
No, your eyes do not deceive you. Duke Nukem Forever is back, at least in unconfirmed rumor form, but if those rumors turn out true we'll all be playing some portion of it sooner than anyone could in their right mind have possibly thought. According to Kotaku, various anonymous sources now say that Duke Nukem Forever is now in development at Gearbox, the developer behind Borderlands, and one source even said a demo could be available before the end of the year.

For those who need a quick refresher, Duke Nukem Forever had been in development at 3D Realms since 1997 (for perspective, that was the year Batman & Robin came out), until the game's future was made less clear than ever when the development team at 3D Realms was disbanded last year. But now, if this new rumor is accurate, evidently the project remains alive with Gearbox (which, you may recall, was apparently at one point developing a now-canceled Duke spin-off called Duke Begins).

Of course, whether this rumor is accurate remains to be seen, as a wave of "no comments" has been issued by all interested parties. Take-Two confirmed to Kotaku that they retain the publishing rights to the game, but didn't comment on whether Gearbox was now working on it. 3D Realms founder George Broussard -- who had long been leading development on Duke Nukem Forever -- didn't respond either, and Gearbox president Randy Pitchford also declined to comment, although he curiously said that he might be able to "clarify the situation" at the Penny Arcade Expo in September.

In the meanwhile, it looks like a glimmer of hope -- if only a glimmer -- remains for one of the most storied projects in videogame history.
DNF is video game history's greatest/worst cocktease.
