I got a virus from grooveshark

So there is this website called grooveshark that shares music, so I went on to listen to some, but then I got a Trojan virus with the the name of Security Tool. The virus had caused a fake security program to pop up on the computer and kept creating pop-ups claiming that fake viruses were attacking my computer. Me and my dad managed to delete it via the Recycling Bin and promptly emptied it, so we think that got rid of it, but I want to know if anyone had this virus put on their computer before? And if this particular virus, the Security Tool, does any actual harm to the computer.

I just got that an hour ago from DA.

I deleted it promptly, so I don't know if it does any real damage.

I don't see ads, and don't run javascript, so, no virus for me.

Here ya go:

Security Tool - how to remove

In the future, I suggest running something like Spybot Search & Destroy's "Tea Timer" program, so you can monitor changes made to your registry.

Also, for future reference, if you press CTRL ALT DEL to open the task manager, and switch to the "processes" tab, you'll get a list of visible processes running on your computer. On the left, in the "Image Name" column, you'll see the name of the executables running on your system. With Google, you can individually search program executables up - just put in the program's name, or use a question like "What is such&such.exe". There are a lot of technical support sites that maintain lists of known executables.

Familiarize yourself with the programs in your task manager and what they do. If you pickup malware, you should be able to find the odd-one-out in your processes tab.

Oh, and here's a short pointer for crippling malware - a lot of them will be undeletable while running windows in regular mode or even safe mode. You can usually still rename the directories the files are in, making any references to them bad links. If you can find a malware's root directory, but don't have any tools or the knowledge to remove it, you can usually at least cripple it with some simple folder-name changes until you've figured out how to rid yourself of it.

Removing malware is a lot harder than just moving it to the Recycling Bin. There's usually deep hooks somewhere in the system, and if you're concerned about performance/privacy/security, you should just format your hard drive. Nuke the site from orbit; it's the only way to make sure.

I guess I should have I`ll give more details on the deletion process we went through. Checking on how to delete the Security Tool, we managed to find the folder it was hiding in and renamed it, after renaming it (it was formerly just a random eight-digit number) we restarted the computer, re-located the folder, and right-clicked it and clicked delete. The virus appears to be gone from the computer, the icon on the desktop had disappeared and we`re not recieving the pop-ups that had appeared before.
