Mabinogi is an MMORPG made by the company of Nexon. In Mabinogi you can interact with other players, battle fierce monsters, and live ur own fantasy life as a Human, Giant or Elf. This game is very fun, and has a large thriving community. The game can be found at Nexon.net and it is free to download and play. The game has many incredible features including Guilds,Mairrage and PvP.

Being a Nexon Game, I assume you are at a huge disadvantage if you don't pay monthly for new items, the graphics are sup par, and the story is incomprehensible.

Am I wrong?

No you are at no disadvantage, the only things you pay for are specialty items such as pets and extra characters. And the story and graphics are pretty good. They patch the game usually atleast once a month and they made the world huge. Everyone can check out videos of the game on Youtube.
