I've decided to give Dwarf Fortress a try.

I haven't played this much before, so chances are I'll be spending the next few years trying to figure out the game mechanics. Any other Dorf Fortress players here? Any tips/suggestions?

You picked the greatest time to start playing it, Toady updated about 2-3 weeks ago and due to all the code being rewritten to C++ game is very buggy for the moment, give it one to two weeks more and it should be more stable to play.

And if you want to learn how to play it Cap'n Duck have a great video tutorial.

YouTube - Dwarf Fortress Video Tutorial part 01 - World Generation & Finding a site

He allso links to more stuff, but i can throw this in just to be sure.

Dwarf Fortress Wiki

Myself i have played the game for about 6 months

My suggestion: Ignore Jere and don't touch the new version.

Go straight for the pre-prepared tutorial pack here: The Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial for Dwarf Fortress – Part 1: “WTF?” « After Action Reporter

I had a friend teach me how to play. It was fun for a little while but eventually I just got confused and stopped giving a crap. I dunno. It's probably really cool if you get into it.

That's the Cowards way!

Though i have to say that it is the fastest way to learn the stuff but it's not the "fun" way.

It is a difficult game. I've only managed to get the economy started in one fortress, but there were so many dwarves that only 5 or so actually had a job, and i couldn't micromanage it so that most of them were working. I abandoned soon after.

I gave up trying a long time ago.

I don't have enough time! I need that time for procrastination.

I've been feeling adventurous, so I've decided to give Dorf Fortress another try. Hopefully I'll figure out what all the... everything means.

If enough people here at VGF get decent at DF, maybe we could try a succession game sometime.

Actually, my dwarves have be drinking water ever since. Thanks, Chunky.

I've played for a little while, and so far I've figured out how to get my dwarves to mine, cut down trees, forage, and stockpile things. Uhh, that's pretty much it.

Dug a small base in the hillside with bedrooms, two workshops, a still, multiple rooms for storage, and a barracks (under construction). The place is a bit of a mess, and there's no real design plan (I just build what I need, then when I need something new I build more corridors and more rooms beside everything else). I'm still in the summer of my first year, and the first batch of immigrants arrived. No problems from animals so far except a horde of macaques, which were dispatched by the dog I brought along.

The only problems I still have are figuring out what to do with the tame animals, and how to make potash for farming.

Is there a way to get the useless shorties to do work when I want to? I had a section that needed to be mined out and a bunch of idlers with the "mining" labor preference enabled, yet they just sat there like a bunch of lazy hobbits.
