| Senior Member | Bans from websites We all know you can do a ban from an IP address. This, however, can be spoofed. We know you can ban a MAC address. This too, can be spoofed. Is there technology in today's world to allow us to go through proxies and spoofed addresses to still throw up a ban? I'm wondering because I have noticed people exploiting hiding behind proxies and such to bypass the ban. Any computer techies would probably know better than me. Basically asking if you can still track the person's true address through it's fake address in order to keep a ban alive. |

Essentially, we can cross-reference your style to what we already know. There are a large amount of accounts I've banned before they've been reported. I'd recite behavioral cues, but that would just make it more difficult for myself. Besides, trolls are usually idiots by default, hence their behavior. They don't use proxies here even 10% of the time, or if they do they have to use one close-to-home to get any decent latency on their connection. That in itself is a cue to who's who. If you don't mind wasting a lot of time, though, you can compile information to report a repeat offender to their parent ISP to blacklist them. They'll get a warning first, but if they're reported again they'll essentially be personally banned from all major services. Of course, that doesn't stop them from going to an internet cafe or library, but are you really going to go that far out of your way just to troll some forums? I've been admin at a few forums, anyway, and I at one point personally looked over every new account registering at my forum. We used to do that at VGF. It's an effective trump. |

As an admin at other sites I can also spot trolls from far away. You tend to get good at it if a large amount of them are banging down the gates; they have these speech patterns which become repetitive over time. |

And in RO. They banned you by IP. |

"Argentina's being a dick; so long and thanks for all the trolls." |

| Senior Member | I have found there to be certain people who no matter how we try to impose bans he keeps popping up. I live for the day we are able to track a person through spoofed addresses. Unfortunately I cannot say why I ask the question (and no, i am not one who wants to spoof my address) due to legal issues that are rising on other sites, but it seems like with the technological advances, we are doomed to rising and smarter cybercrime. I have not found a solution to track someone down legitimately, and I asked here kind of as a last resort to see if anyone knew of something I didn't already know. |

| Senior Member | Seeing as there is no possible solution to keep these people off the website, and as they keep using third party clients to destroy everything, it was deemed best to shut everything down for a while and rebuild everything from scratch. Unfortunate, but needed. Lesson learned, flash is very unsecure and vulnerable for programs to be run on. |
