Blizzard Interested in StarCraft Movie "with Right Partners"

Blizzard Interested in StarCraft Movie "with Right Partners"

Quote:
It looks like Blizzard has slightly lower standards than Valve when it comes to adapting their properties into movies, in that they will actually consider outside help. That help just needs to be of a caliber no less than James Cameron's.

Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, Blizzard's Rob Pardo, executive vice president of game design, said they've always been open to adaptions for their games -- particularly StarCraft -- so long as they find the "right partners" to adapt them with. "We probably could have made a ['StarCraft'] movie or something on TV years and years ago, but it's really important to us that we find creative people that are really talented but also really excited about our properties," Pardo explained. "That's always been the challenge for us. I think if Jim Cameron came to us tomorrow and said, 'You want to make a 'StarCraft' movie?' we'd probably sign that."

Pardo also said this is exactly what happened with World of Warcraft, and why they decided to go ahead with that film adaptation. "We were really excited about being involved with Legendary Pictures, who we thought had a really good track record with these sorts of movies that would make sense for our franchises," Pardo explained. Previous adaptations under Legendary Pictures' banner include Watchmen, 300, Where the Wild Things Are, and Christopher Nolan's Batman films.

As for an update on the WoW movie, Pardo said there isn't much new to say, other than that Blizzard is still really excited and that it's "still in that story-development phase." Sam Raimi is attached to direct, and he may not quite have the legacy of James Cameron, but he has directed such fan-favorite and critically acclaimed films as the Evil Dead series and Spider-Man 1 and 2 (and yes, 3, but let's give him a pass on that one).

StarCraft 2, meanwhile, quickly became the fastest selling real-time strategy game ever when it launched earlier this month, so it wouldn't be surprising if adaptation talks between Blizzard and movie studios heated up quickly.
A StarCraft movie by James Cameron? I could see it happening.

Also, they're making a WoW movie? Wat?

don't think WoW movie, thats just a title cash-in. Warcraft: the movie could be pretty cool, remember all those awesome cutscenes in warcraft 3?

Starcraft makes a bit more sense as a movie though, yeah

Yeah, those cutscenes were great. They almost made up for the single-player game being a grindy wannabe RPG with a low unit cap.

uh the warcraft 3 frozen throne campaign owned

mainly because that was around when blizzard realized noone used the campaign for practice for multiplayer as they were originally intended and started mixing things up

but yeah warcraft 3 in general was kind of **** when you weren't in the frozen throne campaign or custom maps

Did it? I wasn't interested enough after the first unaltered campaign to spend money on more of it. Decent story, though. Wish they would've cut it down to three races and put more attention to them. I didn't care for the human plot focusing entirely on that selfish bastard, for one thing. Who really wants to play as a self-absorbed jackass? They made it too hero-centric, IMO.

Wonder if SC2 ended up the same. Guess I'll never know, at this rate.

It just depends on execution. Can it be executed well? Some of the worst ideas turned out well because they were executed nice. (How about a movie with another guilt trip environmentalist message and a script that doesn't offer anything new? Bad Idea? I just described the highest grossing movie of 2009.)
