Got any fortresses you're working on? Any graphic sets or skins that you like? Any thoughts on the most recent updates? I started a new fortress not too long ago, but this time I wanted to try something challenging. I'm going to build my fortress up, instead of digging it down. It'll be like a human city, with apartment buildings, warehouses, skyscrapers, and a central keep, all surrounded by city walls and a moat. The only things that will go underground will be the mineshaft (to dig for stone) and basements. The fortress is named Hammermonk. I chose a flatland to build the fortress, which had a stream that would be useful for maintaining the new city. The biggest obstacle at this point was locating stone, which was an issue since there was an aquifer. Using the cave-in trick, however, the miners were able to bypass the aquifier and dig into the deep earth. The first building I had constructed was a mine access, which had a rock storage room on the side. A workshop was constructed just north of it. ![]() (I got a graphic set, so it should be easier for those of you unfamiliar with DF to figure out what's going on.) All buildings have stone walls, stone floors on the interior, and stone roofs. In order to build roofs, temporary ramps need to be constructed to allow workers access to the top of the buildings. The construction requires a lot of dwarves skilled in masonry, and the massive amount of stone we need means there needs to be a lot of miners, too. In the mid-summer, while the first few buildings were still under construction, some much-needed migrants arrived, and helped speed up the process. In order to keep everyone fed, a couple of animals had to be butchered, and plants were constantly being gathered from the fields. The brook made sure nobody died of thirst. The dwarven trade caravan arrived in autumn, but there wasn't much for my dwarves to trade with, so they ended up just getting a couple of plump helmets. ![]() By the end of the year, I had one building completed and three partially completed, and numerous others planned out. We'll see how the fortress goes from here. |
