Just felt like throwing this out there: lately I've been playing DOOM. yes, that's right, DOOM. I found a fan-made version that emulates the original and works with Vista, and it's extremely fun. I feel like I'm, I dunno, romping through an ancient temple or something. Like I'm playing with history itself. Anyone else have nice experiences with this game, or other early 90s computer games? potentially other ones that I could check out? |

The Wolfenstein 3D engine was long-lived and was improved and used again to resounding successes in Blake Stone and Rise of the Triad, which are probably more accessible than Wolfenstein itself. The Doom itself made the rounds quite a bit, and you can check out some of the other spinoffs of that with Heretic, Hexen, and Strife. id Software's earlier expertise predates Doom by quite a bit, and series like Catacomb 3D is a great place to go when you're looking for more games with that action/puzzle flavor. While you're on id games and those related, you should absolutely check out the Commander Keen series - if you like platformers. I'd also recommend some Apogee games, since early Apogee and id Software are pretty intertwined. In that vein, I'd suggest checking out Duke Nukem 1 and 2, and Halloween Harry aka Alien Carnage. Of course, there's a boatload of older games that I could be recommending, but those are some great ones off the top of my head.\ And if you'd like to see an FPS subgenre that's been left to fallow, definitely check out the excellent Descent series. Those were all great games. |

I remember when I'd play FPS games with the cursor keys (instead of the industry standard WSAD, because the letter W was not invented yet). |
